looking for plans/kit 20+ foot Whitehall type boat.

Check these out; Building Small Craft by John Gardner & American Small Craft by Chappelle. Both review a number of craft and what they were originaly built and used for and I think they both have a number of offsets to help one on the way to build.As far as a 20+ foot Whitehall goes, I think they were on the order of 18 or 19 feet in length tops.Good luck on your quest.

That seams to be true, the largest "whitehall" boat plans I have been able to find are around 17'.
Also some of the
"captains gig's" I have seen are 25' to 30' long. I would like to build something in between. 20' to 21' seems the perfect length. I also suspect it would be a good sailing boat, or rowing, or even electric.

Twenty feet is past the point where most people are going to be adding cuddys, etc, so modern open boat plans at that length are going to be scarce. Gardner's Building Classic Small Craft has lots of information on Whitehalls and their cousins, but they mostly less than 20'. Maybe Chappelle's books about the American navy's ships would have lines for the ship's boats?

The curious thing about the size of available plans is that 17 feet was the minimal size of the Whitehalls. If you read Gardner's description of classic Whitehall construction, you should want to do it that way though you may not feel up to it. Charlton Smith wrote an article for Rudder magazine with more detail on this process. I could send you a copy of that article some way of other, or tell you the vol. & page when I dig it out.

Gardner draws the Beachcomber/Alpha dory at 21' LOA in both the book already cited and in his Dory Book.

Mystic Seaport has several plans that might suit. There is a 20' Whitehall, 75.436, a 20' Lawley gig, Misc. 4, the 25' gig from Noma 59.967 and I think the Winde Whitehall Misc. 2 although I do not recall her length.
