    Default Souix sue brewers

I bet the brewers have huge war chests. I hope the tribe gets something out of this. Alcoholism, poverty, and drug use on Native American reservations is a national disgrace, with Pine Ridge being amongst the worst, if not the worst.

Yup, but if you knowingly give a loaded gun to a profoundly depressed person, don't you think you are even a little responsible for them blowing their head off? Especially if you made a few bucks on the deal . . .

Does someone who lost everything at the Slot machines get to sue the tribe for his Gambling Jones? Its the same argument turned around.

I think you have no flipping clue what you're talking about, it's actually very clear you don't. Yes you have a point about personal responsibility but this issue is so much more complicated than that.

If you want to read "Bury my heart at Wounded Knee" by Dee Brown to start and then have a look at this, "Hidden America: Children of the plains". If you still feel the same way afterwards then we can talk.

I don't think that breweries are any more responsible than baseball bat makers would be for a rash of bat related beatings. The ones who should be responsible are the retailers in the town of 12 people that sell what was it...5,000,000 cans of beer in 2010. Those people are knowingly breaking the law. Brewers have no control over who legally buys their product nor is their product any more dangerous than dozens of other things on the market that require responsible consumption or use or else they can be dangerous. Just remember...any legal monetary findings against the breweries will simply be passed along to the rest of us who aren't doing anything wrong. I am so tired of the sue happiness going on in this country... nobody seems to want to take personal responsibility for their actions. How can a company that is 5 steps away be responsible for what you or the person who is one step away up the stairs do? It is simply that the big company has the big money and that is all that it is about. Odds are that any money that the tribe gets...only a few will benefit and the rest will not see a dime.

I caught a news story on this last evening - they interviewed two women who seem quite knowledgeable about this lawsuit, as well as the problems their community has with widespread alcohol abuse. It is a very complex problem; on the one hand, I applaud their efforts to 'close down' the alcohol retailers across the border in nebraska, and yes, it is too bad those retailers are so enamoured of the almighty dollar that they're willing to sell to this addicted population. I hope they succeed. OTOH, the 'rez' has a lot of deep-seated problems, and shutting down these retailers addresses almost none of them. Personal responsibility sounds so reasonable.... and it won't work. Near-universal unemployment, with no hopes of change. Entitlements. Drug sales/abuse (meth, among many). Gangs? On many reservations, big problem. I don't have an answer for this, and I doubt anyone else does, either.
There's a lot of things they didn't tell me when I signed on with this outfit....

Oh yeah, one stat I saw that is important/sad/demoralizing, all in one. 25% of all babies born on that rez have FAS or FAE. That's for a lifetime.

    +1 . . . Yet a few more facets of this problem.

If true, then there may be liabilities associated with Native American casinos (as well as all casinos). Thus, this suit may bite other native tribes in the ass, which could be bad or good.

Semantically, yes. But I think this situation is a bit different.

Didn't the indiginous peoples of North America make beer prior to the arrival of the Europeans?
