Default 200-Year-Old Wreck Off Watch Hill

For 2 centuries it rested a mile from shore, shrouded by a treacherous reef from the pleasure boaters and beachgoers who haunt New England’s southern coast.

Now, researchers from the U.S. Navy are hoping to confirm what the men who discovered the wreck believe: that the sunken ship off the coast of Rhode Island is the USS Revenge, commanded by Oliver Hazard Perry and lost on a stormy January day in 1811.

A "treacherous reef" a mile from Watch Hill?

The Revenge, now there's a ship's name to play with. A good friend, now passed, was a descendent of Sir Richard Grenville.

Are they going to excavate or just mark the wreck for protection from looters?

Look at a chart of the waters between the eastern tip of Fishers Island and Watch Hill

Good spot for kayak surfing, probably good for stripers... not so good for a ship, though.

This new ship here is fitted according to the reported increase of knowledge among mankind. Namely, she is cumbered end to end with bells and trumpets and clocks and wires. It has been told to me she can call voices out of the air or the waters to con the ship while her crew sleep. But sleep though lightly. It has not yet been told to me that the sea has ceased to be the sea.--Rudyard Kipling

Oh I've gone rockpicking through there a few times, yes.

I find it amazing that anything in that stretch of water can go undiscovered for 2 years, let alone 200!

I had the same thought . It seems that divers would have worked around all those rocks long since ; looking for lobster if nothing else.
