The practice, amongst the true believers, would survive underground. Those who only practice due to peer pressure may well give it up.

Probably not; 'man' has apparently been 'worshiping' since time immemorial, before Christianity, before Islam. The evidence is in the cave paintings and artifacts. And so....

even one generation in an even more isolated locale, and some sort of 'regeneration' would presumably occur.
There's a lot of things they didn't tell me when I signed on with this outfit....

Assuming the ban were successful, people would pursue other avenues with religious zeal: yoga, vegetarianism, politics.

The global climate scam is basically the earth's natural cycle according to god's plan. Do not confuse it with evolution or man's infulence.

“Do you believe in God, Winston?”
    “No.”
“Then what is it, this principle that will defeat us?”
“I don’t know. The spirit of Man.”
“Do you consider yourself a man?”
    “Yes.”
“If you are a man, Winston, you are the last man. Your kind is extinct; we are the inheritors. Do you understand that you are alone? You are outside history, you are nonexistent.”

To be honest, I don't get it. I understand meditation and see that it can serve as a form of prayer, but yoga just makes you flexible and such. It teaches you to swallow a tissue and send it out your nose. I've never really understood how a form of exercise fits into religion.

It didn't start out as exercise. More a meditative posture .... anchoring.

The classic Lotus or full lotus are one of many, but fundamental postures (Asanas) for the observation of the mind and breath.
I'm fond of the corpse asana.

I mean in no way to offend you, but I think this proves my point. People want to find religion to fill a void within them. When they reject theology, they turn to other things. This is exercise IMHO.

No offense at all CW. I only know Hinduism as a passing fancy where my wife love and produces Hindu Chant (Kirtan) events here in Portland and I have a childhood friend who joined the Hare Krishna crew in 1967 and is still with them.
But I sure like Hinduism's little sister Buddhism.

American Yoga is almost exclusively a gym exercise.

Post #2, +1. Soviet Union as a prime example. As soon as it hiccupped its last breath, the Russian Orthodox Church was back with a vengeance.

If religion disappeared today it would be reinvented tomorrow if not sooner.

Well, you just got a case study. It's interesting that Hungary just withdrew official recognition of most religions, many of them mainstream (according to the article: all denominations of Islam, Buddhism, and Hinduism, as well as several Catholic orders, Episcopalians, Jehovah's Witnesses, Mormons, Methodists and others). http://abna.ir/data.asp?lang=3&Id=288543

    Most sensible post, thus far!

my wife once said something that i think sums up religion pretty well. the only reason to raise your children Catholic is to give them something other than their parents to rebel against/reject. (i suppose you could insert your religion of choice into that line)

Unrelated to your bottom, Justin-- I continually find it fascinating that when folks get bad news, or terminal news that they FLOCK to CHURCHES! Whether it be 9/11 ... or their kid(s) ... or themselves ... or a spouse! Why is this?Do these folks SUDDENLY become STUPID? Or what?Someone explain this to me ... seriously!

thanks for the compliment, or alternatively, good troll you caught me, either way i'll respond, although i haven't a faintest what the "unrelated to your bottom" bit means.

i take it that people as a whole are generally stupid, and weak minded, and long for a purpose or reason to live life as a good person. people need something to cling to for comfort, so those with more power have invented various religions as a way of controlling the masses. when bad things happen that people can't rationalize, they seek comfort wherever they can, some in the most irrational of places, such as church, or the bottom of a glass. People like to be told what they can and can't do, why the world is the way it is, or at least they seek for someone that can tell them "it'll get better" or "there's a reason for all this you'll see". I find my comfort elsewhere. I'd like to be religious, it really does seem to make things easier, having an easy answer for life's great mystery, but i choose to trust in reason and science.

Christianity wasn't the first religion, nor will it be the last, heck, Scientology's going great and that was just thought up a few decades ago by a science fiction writer. I

It's been done several times. What evolved? Stalinism, Maoism, killing fields. The fault is not in our gods, it's in ourselves.
