What are those rows of dark dots I see?
George
George,
Those are epoxy plugs for drilling through to screw hdpe rub strakes to.
On the inside of the hull there will be a keelson and stringers over them for screwing to.
With that said has anybody tapped threads in thickened epoxy?
Or how about casting them into the epoxy?
My thought was to over bore and epoxy plug the the keelson and stringers, then drill and tap.
I thought I would use 5/16" countersunk ss nc machine screws to bolt the strakes on.

Not only do I see water, but I see me in it motoring down the White River! Droll and slobber. Love'em!
Absolutely! Take the Pacific to Panama, head east, up to the Gulf to the Mississippi, when you hit Arkansas, hang a left on the White River and head on up to Bull Shoals Lake, hop the dam and follow the White River to Tablerock Lake, nead north to the James River arm and head north, that will take you to Springfield Lake, hop the dam and head for the US Hwy 65 bridge, on the left (north), you'll see the Missouri Conservation area, head into the cove and go to the end and get out. Walk about 50 feet to the street and head up the hill to your left, I'm the 4th house on the right!
Come on down, I'd love to see your freighter!

Are you going to fit a breasthook first Royce?

Seems reasonable enough. I've never run an inwale around the breasthook like that before, is that how it's drawn in the plans?

Jim,
The plans show a standard plywood breasthook and inwale.
My thought was to run scuppered inwales and have the last scupper block run from stem to 4" past of where the inwale
radius meets the scupper block. The scupper block would also taper from 3/4" to 1/4"at the stem. Does any of that make a lick of sense?
Hey Royce.
I think I was with you until you started talking about tapering the scupper block at the stem. If I was going to do it I think I would leave the scupper blocks all the same and just match the breasthook to the inwale you're working on. Are you planing on skipping the breasthook all together?

Jim,
All of the scupper blocks will be 3/4"thick x 4" long except the last one coming into the stem which will be around 16" long tapering from 3/4" to 1/4" at the stem. The in and outwales are 1" thick, given that I felt that tapering that piece might have somewhat of a slimming affect to the whole bow. The other thing I have not talked of is I will cut the breast hook to allow a man to reach in and have hand hold around the inwale. Kind of hard to explain. None of this even remotely resembles tradition that I have seen, but what got all of this started was functional handholds that are flush and non snagging. I do not know if any of this clear, if not I will be working on some of this next week and will post photos.
Thanks for the input
Royce
Looking good Royce. Are you working alone?
I would love to see more pictures of the umiak. Did you record the build?

yes tim,
very fun build.
of the boats i have built this is by far the most satisfying to build and paddle.
it was funny, when i told my wife i was going to build another boat i got the stink eye and then was told it needed to hold the whole family.
well now there is 15 of us,so i thought how about a umiak.
i am glad my garage is not any longer than it is,i would have had a 35 footer instead a 25 footer!!!
say the word and i will post some action photos.
