My boat had a really neat engine in it. The Albin AD-2. The mechanic refitted it with a wet muffler, but put a 3 foot long horizontal pipe into it from the exhaust manifold. He welded a pipe from the raw water cooling system to mix within this horizontal pipe that was almost five inches above the manifold. When the engine shuts off the water poured into the engine. I was too much of an amateur to realize this terrible design, but it was the ultimate demise of my engine.
At this point my boat is on the hard and i need a replacement. The problem is the old engine had a 4 inch drop from the center of the drive shaft to the prop shaft. This drop apparently is common in some boats especially a navy Whaleboats. My vessel is an Atkins Eric based of the Colin Archer design. The mechanics didn't know what to do and were talking about tearing into the stringers which are 6x6 pieces of oak. This is not the direction I want to go. What I need is another engine with the navy gear transmission. I wanted to know if anyone had a resource or knew of other engines with this navy gear.
i am looking at a Westerbeke 4-107 the navy gear is the Paragon SA1 which I can't find. The Westerbeke M40 is a very similar engine, and it uses a Navy gear called the Paragon 220 which i can find online. Does anyone know if this would fit? Is there a better option out there to get this 4 inch drop? Thank you
