I have one of Jack Sobon's books. Very good info. I've used it as a referrence for probably 17 yrs. This type of framing is very different from what I see here in Tidewater Va. though.
I've used some of these scarf joints and it's unreal how much they will move, shrink, twist and change over time. A well fit, tight, wedged scarf joint is made better by using carriage bolts instead of trunnels, in my opinion. And, yes, I've seen some pretty sizeable iron fittings in OLD stroctures. I pulled a (hand-forged) nail out of an old house door jamb last year that is 1/2" square x 11" long.
I love it! I feel like rushing straight off to the shop to cut an under-squinted stop-splayed wedged tabled scarph or two to have for my very own! Great illustrations!
Amphibious Macroplankton Oughtredia doublendus
Mostly found frequenting the littoral and estuarine zones in the southern half of the Salish Sea, though sightings have been recorded both north and south of this area, and occasionally, but rarely, inland, in freshwater environments. This species lives on micro-brewed beer and dutch-oven biscuits, and displays brightly colored nylon and gore-tex plumage during the rainy season. Approach with caution!

I cut one today and it was a hoot. Wife was shopping and I had some bluegrass on in the garage ...
Funny you talked abouth the trunnels, I was thinking about using the wedged keys, but if you get a little shrinkage the key is not effective. So I went with the straight scarf with carriage bolts in mind. And I did buy some Aerodux 500 (I think) for the glue joint as I can probably get that joint pretty tight.
Oh, Man...cutting scarf joints in the garage with some bluegrass playin'....It don't get much better than that! Merry Christmas and Happy new year!
Another thank you for the link.................., printing now.......
