Hi Barney .
Gary good luck with the Industrial Brother they are a very good machine, Nellie has had hers for 34 years with only periodic services .
Peter, thank you for eBay link the other day. My Gori 2-blade folder arrived today. A bit pitted but mechanically excellent![]()
Very cold here again today, but dry. During lunch break from volunteering Matt and I put Sheila's car back together, including the rebuilt ECU/MAFs, and hey presto, it works again. Tomorrow evening the rain is due to return so the race is on to complete the roof plumbing part of the repairs. We should make it in time - it's all laid out ready to install now, just need to check that I haven't miscalculated the slopes, water doesn't run uphill.
No boat news, other than I've booked the delivery of my new kayak. It's too cold to use it still, so I'm not actully hanging out for it.

When I first joined WBF they made me write a book to prove I was a real yachty. I was so gullible.
We had solid ice on some puddles this morning.
I can remember -8C at Aldgate Phil, it gets cool down there but microclimate is everything , I've seen that temperature up here on the Tweed coast a few years ago too..... I was on a bicycle too.![]()

Would anyone here recommend a wetsuit for cooler months kayaking in SA?

I wear a spring suit, but I'd hate to wear one all day paddling.
I'm soon to get separate 3mm wetsuit pants (long) and front-zip long sleeve 'jacket'. I intended them for snorkelling. but since I am willing to make sacrifices, I'll go for a paddle in them, just for you, Bruce. The top part hasn't arrived yet, so it has to fit properly first.

Sharkskin is comfortable and flexible but not very warm if you go in and not warm if you get wet and you're in a bruuze. If it's pretty cold and you do go in, I think a good outfit would be a sharkskin top, a short john (sleeveless with short legs) and a dinghy smock ( a sprayjacket that slips over your head and seals around the neck).
Surfing wetsuits these days are pretty comfortable - thin and very flexible and pretty much always steamers for cold water. But you'd still get chafing paddling a kayak and you'd also get pretty hot in a steamer in a kayak, unless you were getting wet a lot.
Rick
PS Wear the sharkskin top under the short john.

There may be bruuze, as well as chop, but unlikely to be surf. Surfers say wear a surfer's wetsuit. Would a shark object to me wearing sharkskin? We have very big sharks along the beaches here. Shortjohn sounds good, apart from the fact that it would be a poor nickname to acquire. Matt, I look forward to your test.

I just remembered I have some videos of the bloke who made the kayak, in the surf at Byron Bay. It looks like he wears a wetsuit with 3/4 length sleeves and legs, and yes, Rick, his name IS John, thank you. Maybe he has callouses after years of chafing. He is older than me. Maybe the trade-off for bouyancy and heat retention is worth it for him. Also, he kayak surfs in big waves so he wouldn't have the issue of overheating that I might have in our flat water conditions.
I should check if they make a shortbruce wetsuit.

I suggest a couch, a log fire and a hot drink.
I thought the objective was to be warm and dry.
