I spent the afternoon welding JIM's trailer ..... it's slow work!
The morning weeding the bush near the house and potting up 20 red cedars and a few quandongs. Fun.

Home. Cold and overcast but nowhere near as much rain as the east coast. We drove through near record rain yesterday evidently. I've found the driving for the whole trip interesting and enjoyable, even the odd landslide yesterday.
Anne says it's too cold can we go back up? I said no, too wet and no snow.

Don't remind me. I'm not battle-fit at present. I can hardly move just now. I don't know if the aches are from yesterday's fall (a witness said it looked nasty)... or today's efforts lifting engines, etc. Fortunately I got home at 11 something to discover a half bottle of red left over from yesterday.

The sad bit is... we can't get the damn engine out. The suspicion is that the car may have suffered a hit when new... and the distance between the rails is a bit shrunken. We may have to regroup and drop the tranny too. Ugh.

Ian, I once changed a clutch and universals on an old Riley 2.5. Basically you lifted the body off the chassis to do anything serious to it. Manual said 40 hours, for a mechanic!

A colleague has a Toyota RAV4. I think it's a couple of models old. Same deal with the clutch; they have to take the front subframe and whole engine out. Ouch.

This looks okay, except I think whoever carved the compression post must have been on drugs. Actually, maybe they overdosed on coffee as the ad says the boat has 6 coffee grinders. That's a bit excessive.

My daughter in the US rang this morning for a chat, she lives in Palm Springs. The temperature has been hitting 50C there!
Anyway she wants to buy me a bottle of scotch for my birthday next month, man it is sooo hard to choose. I've given her two options a 16 year old Lagavulin and a 15 year old Dalwhinnie. There were a few I would have loved to suggest but the prices were over the ton mark.

Made it to Sydney today. Between our total unfamiliarity with driving around the place, three lanes shoehorned in where there should only be two, and the slighly vague directions from the Garmin GPS, I cant say as it was a relaxing experience. The "lane assist" feature on the GPS never seemed to feature when it was really needed, and resulted in a couple of minor unplanned detours. Back on public transport for the next two days, then home.
Had dinner at Darling harbour tonight, and the kids fly in tommorrow, having finished mid year exams at uni. The girl child will no doubt want to go shopping

If you recall, my beloved drives a Merc A160 of a certain vintage, and it has been communicating with us via check engine light and OBDii codes. Because the car has been running well apart from the warning lights, I've had the luxury of procrastinating about what it has been trying to say. So yesterday and today it started shouting, by virtue of running rough, being grumpy about starting at all and displaying a collection of different engine codes. Eventually it decided it would go no further until I paid attention. Luckily, that happened outside our daughter's place. So, a couple of few weeks ago the RAA had talked me into parting with some moolah to cover the risk of the truck not getting us to Pete's and back (Ha!) so I called on their rescue service. The diagnosis was fuel pump gone. New fuel pump ordered, new fuel filter already at hand, car delivered back to our place and no harm done.

Boats.

Rick that boat on Gumtree looks a bonzer bottler thing. Someone should buy it and sail it a couple of thousand miles to where they live, and ask me along as crew and cook.

Enormous cabin for a 32 footer and very beamy! Photos can be so deceptive, from the outside she looks like she wouldn't have standing headroom even in the centre for anyone over 6' but the interior shots look very roomy

Getting ready to put the first bag together. I was having trouble for some reason in getting my head around sewing the ends in...simple really. Anyway I figured I'd practice on some scrappy bits and one thing led to another and I ended up with this...sort of a dilly bag. The webbing and handles are recycled from some sort of waterproof cover I had kicking around the shed.

The folded material in the bag is actually the bag I'm about to sew together. I'm using cotton thread for the first one in case I have to rip a seam.

The loose black thread you can see is the old stitching I had to rip to remove the webbing etc. I didn't bother to clean it all off.

Okay I'll post them now.
This one end sewn in. First mistake is the webbing is running the wrong way.


This is both ends sewn in, the tabs at each end are supposed to be on the inside. The edges in the top have a gap of about 2.5 cms at one end and they overlap by 2cms at the other end. As a first off it's not too bad. I'd use it.

Ha ha, just for the avoidance of doubt, I'm not expecting to find the trailer full upon my return! The ferry crossing turned out to be very smooth, I guess the wind must have died during the night. Looked pretty fierce as we headed out. Thanks all for the kind thoughts.
