It's why having an x-ray or CT scan is a very good idea.

You know what medicos do when they can't treat the problem itself? They treat the symptoms. That's what pain-killers like endone are all about, and it's what neurotomy's all about as well. No-one suggests it's a cure for the damage, it's not. But it can be a cure for the pain from the damage.

If all else fails, neurotomy would seem a pretty good option to handle the pain, I reckon.
The pain is a symptom, but it is also an issue which exacerbates the original problem by seizing up all the muscles and increasing the inflammation, which increases the pain and is a vicious circle.

Interestingly, according to a number of my doctors about 1 in 4 people are walking around with herniated disks, but because of the location of the herniation they suffer no ill effects like the disabling pain many do suffer and they do nothing to alter their situation because of their blissful unawareness.

Surgery of any kind is an absolute last resort.

Swimming and physio are the first!

Re backs. A sports medicine physiotherapist's advice and acupressure (self applied) manages mine.
Re chairs. When working all day at a terminal I dumped the 'ergonomic chair' and used a small drum head swivel stool with a foot rail. Makes you sit bolt upright. Standing is better if the damage already done allows it. I stand a lot still, one of the first things I learnt as an apprentice.
Re the Couta Boat. Nice, very nice but no. No safe moorings round here, and anyway I have almost enough boats anyway……………………...

Thanks but why does Duncan put it in his posts?

We now have two maxis based in Newcastle - permanently, apparently. Loyal and Ragamuffin. Very impressive boats up close! Beautiful in their way. Their masts stand about twice as tall as anything else in the marina.

Good news is our airline tickets to Melbourne and back in February are booked.

The Watt's river is largely the same, give or take 1939. It's part of Melbourne's near water catchment and well fenced. Only the ranger and the odd fly fishing politician get's in there. Officially of course, There's always a spot where some of the local kids wiggle under.

I think I'm supposed to fly down with you to Hobart, (I'm guessing this is for Hobart right?), but I rarely book plane tickets that far in advance.

I got a reasonable price for Gary and I on the first Jetstar flight out of Melb. on friday morning. Round 6.30AM I think, my 'usual'. I'm considering trying to get access to a small boat, canoe or rowing boat, to toddle round on water. I don't quite know how to go about it but with 4 of us or more it would be useful.

Absolute pea souper here this morning. I may drive Anne to Melbourne depending how she feels.
I had a late afternoon paddle yesterday. Cold air and warm water giving a rising sea mist, and a blood red sunset over a high tide turning it all to red-gold. Fantastic.

I wonder if you could come to an arrangement with the Living Boat Trust in Franklin. The trick of course would be getting one of their boats around to Hobart. Worth asking the question.

That could be in New Zild. Reminds me of a stream/ river walk we used to do at Barrier.

Doesn't look like that now , 2 big storms in 15 destroyed millions of cubic metres

Yes, it's very NZ here on the Tweed , except for the eucalypts and the Summer temperatures .

Jeff, put an add on Gumtree and ask - what have you got to loose?

    Some boat related input.
we're in Hobart for a much-needed mental health break.
Cold - about 2C this morning - but clear and beautiful weather.

here is the view from our AirBnB apartment window as i ate breakfast.

Went for a stroll around the docks across the road at RYCT, and saw this nice looking stern across the way (unfortunately i chopped part of it off with my phone camera)

And from a bit closer, Vanity again.

At first look this boat seemed to have its long offshore cruising set-up perfected - heavy duty self-steering, heavy warp on spool, solar, radar etc..... but then you see that the whole structure has a strong temporary/makeshift construction. Lots of lashings, dodgy screws and not very strong scantlings. i guess they may have lost the original at some stage.

And then there was this little beauty, but very badly in need of a haul-out and a scrub.

Offer it to the wooden boat trust on the proviso that you can use it each time you come down.

Looks like some nice huon pine there and some extraordinary detail matching the hatch into the decking.

I'm pretty sure that second one is an Alan Payne design that I saw down there a few years ago. A really lovely boat in every way. Those marinas at Sandy Bay are fantastic. No security - you can just wander through admiring all the great boats.

I'm actually absolutely certain she's a S'n'S called Sirroco that I've drooled over at every opportunity I had at the festival. I'd recognise the dodger coaming and companionway hatch garage anywhere.
