Phil, I'd heard many years ago that the pidgin for motor bike is/was "motobudbud" in memory of the old single cylinder BSA's that I gather used to be popular there.. Is that correct or a bit of a yarn?

It's pouring down here, 24 hours without a stop and I wonder what my creek will look like by morning. Running 4ft+ at present and very fast. Not used to that, cold as well. Down the bottom of the valley the flat it runs out onto is flooding already and I wonder if the new estate being constructed down there will go under.
I rather like paddock sailing, the site of the desal plant was one of my favourites. When I lived in Ballaarat we'd rush off after a big storm and shoot the flooded treeless gullies in a big Blue Hole canadian, wire fences and all.

Wire fences CAN be a problem . I can remember very carefully and consciously avoiding panic while unwrapping myself from 2 strands of barb wire upside down , 2 foot down in a cheap glass kayak. Our creek was up and it's very hard to see the wire .

It's a wonderful language Phil. I wasn't there long enough to get my head around the Melanesian grammar but I was surprised at how many words I had picked up.

Thanks Greg, I'll keep my eye out, still got a box full of 'gotchas' and 'crazy charlies' from the last bonefish trip!!! They have even been caught off Fraser Island..I keep my eyes out up at the shack too.

I thought I had a settlement to pay K3.5m to 3 groups, but now a sub group of one of them say they are not happy, weren't consulted, didn't agree, and will burn all our sugar cane if we pay any money to anyone.

I think just about all land deals in PNG remain in dispute don't they? Balance of power (i.e., assets) between communities and even within communities is a fundamental principle in PNG culture I think, so any time one group gains any financial advantage over another, it upsets that balance so the disadvantaged party is always going to want to even things up somehow. Everyone I've ever known involved in land deals in PNG, including further development of land leased or sold many years ago, has spent plenty of time tearing their hair out!

When working in PNG, I quickly came to appreciate that every day I would see something amazing - almost without exception!

The only reason I've confined the posts to this thread is that there is a connection to the thread topic because it is written about an antipodean yacht trip. I don't want to be putting people's noses out of joint by posting about a boat trip in a plastic catamaran on a wooden boat forum, that's all. I'll post an invitation to read the drafts up in the Misc. Boats section and see if anyone objects.

Oh, by the way I had a little wooden boat experience this morning. A few years ago I built a racing rowing scull of western red cedar strips. I row it most Sunday mornings. It's a magnificent boat in my eyes, I love the thing dearly. Designed by Graeme king who also helped teach me how to build it. A thorough gentleman and aa master wooden boat builder.

I have a mate working as a commercial diver over there somewhere and he's been telling me that every time they leave harbour someone is trying to find a way of extorting money out of them. The most common is to lay unmarked fishing lines or nets in the channel to try and make sure the work boats hook them up and damage them, while the guys are trying to untangle the lines they get mobbed by fishermen putting the heavies on them to pay compensation. They don't take any money or valuables with them to work so that they can't be forced into paying up, so when they return to base in the evenings there are some very scary standoffs with the fishermen getting all their heavies lined up and the work boat company owners getting all their heavies and police lined up until the police can determine if a compensation should be paid. My mate is an ex Pretoria cop and SA army, so he's a pretty hard man, but he reckons these situations are some of the scariest that he's been in.

Strewth Phil, danger isn't the word,you are going to be in the wrong no matter what. Did the local ref shoot through rather than put his head on the block? Do you have a good supply of heavies of your own just in case?

Do any of you guys know if it is possible to buy 6mm or 8mm door style router bit sets? I can get 12mm ones but my good Makita router is 8mm.

You may be able make something up from the Carbitool replaceable insert router bits. Otherwise I'd be looking at a slot cutting bit with a bearing and then going over it with a moulding bit.

They have the bits but not in 8mm, I guess the bit selection is why I've stuck to a 1/2" router. The bits are a lot stronger too, especially in larger diameter bits or those for deeper cuts.

I heard a rumour that a certain Brisbane department has purchased a new metal lathe and is looking to get rid of the old one. Its big, maybe 2 metres long with a chuck about 250mm in diameter. I have no idea if it's free or for sale but could find out more if anyone is interested. It's old, works, but no-one in the place knows how to work it. Let me know if you want me to seek out more details. I presume it weighs as much as Mars.
