Not stated but Wrights did a lot of cold moulding but I'm not sure if they were doing it back that far .... but I wouldn't be surprised . They built a lot of customs launches and pilot boats cold moulded IIRC .

Either way they built well.

How soon is now?

Wind: 20 knots and gusting 25 to 30.
Vessel: Mirror Class Dinghy The Mighty Pippin.
Skipper: Foolishly turned down crew (more to test himself, or at least that's his own internal reasoning/self justification).
Mistake: Neglected to tie a stopper on the main sheet.
Lesson: Given to two different safety boat crews in how to keep a vessel's head to wind whilst skipper deals with rigging issues.
Movement: Only a broad reach possible. Sailing close hauled almost stops the boat. Any tacking results in either being locked in irons, a broach or full capsize.
Capsize: In four feet of briny. Sails act as a sea anchor laying the boat ahull and presenting full cockpit to the wind resulting in a miraculous self righting... Luckily I was hanging on and could drag myself over the gunnel and successfully gybe about.
Final broad reach: F#$%&*G FLYING! This is bloody brilliant! I'm on starboard and can't do anything but either stop, capsize or keep blasting along. In the event I just miss being t-boned by an NS14 and Laser both flying downwind on port. NS skipper calling out "Don't stop Duncan! Don't bloody stop!"
Harbour approach: Bearing away impossible and still flying... Toward lotsa rocks. Helm down hard to port and boat still wants to bear up to starboard.
Solution: Bear up, luff up and be held steady by a conflicting tide and wind. Tighten topping lift, reset lazy jacks, drop the main and lash it with any bits of spare rigging not associated with the jib. Sail back in nice and quick under jib alone.
Race result: DNF (Along with about half the fleet)
Overall: Next time it's like this I'll still go out but not even worry about the main unless I can reef it.

Sounds like quite a day, and a DNF is hell of a lot better than a DNS.

I enjoyed that Duncan , just think of the pleasure you've brought to the world.
It sorta reminds me of the day I rigged the stripper up with both rigs and sailed it by myself. Damn thing took charge and planed off wherever it wanted, I found a little beach downwind, staggered up it and dropped out one rig so I could sail it back up to weather to the boat.

I'd love a Go Pro John! I have visions of mounting one on a sturdy pole and getting vision of the keel of Looe as she glides over the sandbanks of the Tweed on a clear water day (or some other exotic location). I doubt I'd get away with posting footage my mainsheet mishap - "Keep the &*^%$#$ head to the &*^%$#$ wind!" - or the moment before I pulled up in front of the rocky training wall with the committee on the bank getting the full audio-visual experience as well: "&*^%$#$ TURN! &*^%$#$ TURN! &*^%$#$ TURN!"

Yesterday, our neighbours took off in their Triton 24 about 20 minutes ahead of us. As they rounded Bull Island, some other friends approached them in their ski boat (sort of) to enquire whether they could borrow a mask to aid them in their search for a lost Go Pro. They said to our neighbours that they thought their boat was ours! My comment was that they didn't have much chance of finding that Go Pro! And they didn't. So, I can tell you roughly where there is one if you want one .......

I'm not knocking it , It certainly works for me.

I'd quite like one of those cameras too but I think it would need a computer upgrade to go with it for the file space( I assume).. so an expensive addition for me at the moment.

Something else of possible interest. I visited a mate yesterday who is building a cold mould 24 foot Ranger. He used plastic staples to hold the red cedar laminates, I tried 10mm staples on a sample of flooded gum and they penetrated well if not the crown, they can be planed off flush quite easily.The 10mm plastic staples are around $90 per box of 4000 . A gun is just under $200.

Oh, that's not a pirogue, that's a canoe. The French call it a pirogue as they can't pronounce canoe. When the French try to say canoe, it comes out sounding like a big African antelope, and they're embarrassed about that.
