    Its the Nina.

Friday 14 JuneEnquiries were made following receipt of an email expressing concern for the classic 1928 staysail schooner Nina with a crew of seven travelling from Opua to Newcastle, Australia that may have be overdue. Extensive enquiries were made and it was thought that bad weather and the yacht's position on 4 June that had delayed her arrival time for Newcastle.

4 page thread on CF, comment on page 3 about probable eta of 26th.

Hi Friends Nina, today 15 june 17 05 pm NZ
Just had an update from my mate who has today spoken to SARS NZ search & rescue they both have been over present weather wind patterns & expected wind the conculsion is that Nina prob cannot get to Australia until the 26th unless she motors all the way, thats another 11 days that has to be less of a worry for you,I think another chap said that already so he is spot on with his thoughts.

Spot's have their own batteries and they seemingly last for years. They have an emergency button that makes the a poor mans EPIRB. Iridium phones have their own batteries too, but the need to be recharged about the same as a cell phone

I have the original Spot, I change the batteries every year and use the old ones for stuff around the house, they last in that role as long as new non lithium batteries.

Well, there's a mean East Coast low sitting off our coast now. That's due to move out into the Tasman by Wednesday http://www.bom.gov.au/australia/char...er/index.shtml

If they're below that, then they'll get a quick run towards us but if they're above it, they'll have a fair bit of hill climbing to do, unless they're well above it. They're certainly not in for the easy run we had but if they've been a bit lucky, they'll have had some good wind.

I work in Newcastle Gareth so I'll keep an eye out for Nina, and p'raps snap a few shots if I can. If they did find themselves above that low though, they may even decide to make entry in Brisbane and wait for good weather if they have a reason to travel to Newcastle.

Good luck to them - they need JB's weather reports!

Why not? An intimate lifestyle can't be such a bad thing, can it? Wide open spaces aboard just provide opportunities to gather more material things - grasshopper.

You could consider those sections of ply to be joining gussets on the sawn frames ? The pine would be sole supports .

You're most likely correct Peter. Could the floors/sole supports be Hoop pine with that sort of big knotty grain?

Either way, it seems like a good buy at the moment considering the amount of work that has been done.

SWMB points out that we are, actually and totally, skint. Not just nearly or approximately, but actually and mathematically skint. There's not enough readies at the ready to buy it, let alone ship it to SA and finish it off. The redundancy dosh has all gone and we still don't even qualify for the bloody dole. I'm doing dog walking and some winter rowing coaching for petrol money, and wondering if the blokes who interviewed me last week are going to ring today. [insert your own favourite expletive here]

Out of interest, does anyone know what it might be? I know there was a H12 but 4.2 metres is a bit more than 13.5 feet. I can't find anything through google.

Edit: the H12 (or H12.5 or H12 1/2) is 12'6" LWL, and is longer, wider and has more draft than the one in the Gumtree ad. Also the gumtree mystery boat has a bowsprit. I wonder what it really is? Yet another mystery to solve.

You could post it on a new thread - there seem to be scores of Herreshoff acolytes - someone will know what it is if it's really a Herreshoff. I don't like it, I think it's just too small to be useful.

Happy for your input mate. I'm going to contact them tomorrow, just not sure whether to call or email. Maybe soften them up first with an email, then follow that up an hour later with a call. Whatever. I'll definitely be taking it on one way or another in the morning.

Personally I'd just call, more personal, shows more confidence and is harder to ignore when the other party is likely to be getting 200 or more emails a day.
