John Little (who I'm sure will be along to say hello soon) is coming up this way at the beginning of January. Rick is coming to collect his timber in January...

Greg's said he's in: I have EBS ESP!

John rang me and we discussed the Tweed as a sailing option for when he comes up. I suggested the Richmond, which was his first choice is the more exciting one. An EBS in January sounds like a very fine idea.

I'll stick my head out and say that I don't think they need specialists to work on them. Everyone says that about the S38 engine in my M5. I rebuilt it myself and have over 50,000 km on that rebuilt engine, including four track days. I've heard of plenty of others worked on by supposed specialists that have had troubles.

I was talked out of making some "improvements" to my engine by a mate who is an engineer who did a lot of development work for Ford and Aston Martin. His advice was to follow the book religiously... which is what I did. Not wishing to knock your mates, but specialists often seem to develop their own "knowledge" where they think they know better than the factory engineers - and they often don't follow the book as a result.

Shock horror!! You're not saying "don't trust a specialist" are you Ian?

Gee the bottom is dropping out of the boat market , well in the Scandinavian and European market at least , particularly for wooden boats .
From my experience its not too hot in Australia either.
But how about this one . They have just spent an absolute fortune on it , held their price for a while , and are now trying to unload it for $78,000 Aust , or make an offer.
Its in Italy at the moment I believe , which probably gives a hint at what has happened.

Its too much boat for me , and I don't think I could get a crew too often , but gee , it would be fun !.

That's a lot of boat for $78k Rob. How's the price now on that other one that you are looking at? It could be worth a ridiculous offer.

I've just had a mate tell me that he has bought a business for next to nothing that he tried to buy a few years ago for $12mill. This was his fourth attempt, the second he went back with $6 mill, the third down to $1.3mill and this final one was obscenely less than that after submitting a ridiculously low (and barely serious) tender to purchase through liquidators. To top it off, after the liquidators called him in to do the deal they started removing plant items from the tender sale so he told them to jam it and walked away with an over the shoulder comment to reduce his offer by half if they wanted to try talking to him again. They called him 2 minutes later before he left the car park, the final deal was 50% of his tender offer, the liquidators just had to be shot of the business.

A bit of fun really, but Ron and Bruce from Leda Suspension were amused, and Ron dropped what he was doing to do the job.

I won't say what the job cost as Gentlemen who own Exotic Cars don't discuss money.

As Greg said ... that's a lot of boat and that superstructure might be fun in a big blow. I remember being anchored next to an ex-tuna boat in Princess Charlotte Bay in the tail end of a cyclone.That top hamper on the tuna boat made for an interesting night and I have to say I was surprised to see her afloat the next morning. We dragged. She ploughed .

Greg , I've got photos of the rebuild , and its just MASSIVE !.
No wonder that 42 ft boat weighs 24 tonne , or something.
And the interior is very tastefully done.
In one of the posts from the (very keen) broker , they do mention the money spent , its just a heap of money.
A shame really , but someone is going to get a lot of boat , for peanuts.

Not with 14 minutes to think but an H28 could be good for me. Smaller but a useful size . Mumble ,mumble .

That H28 sure has that 'antiqued' look about it. More work than it looks I'll bet.
Canoe club xmas bash yesterday at a local 5th generation professional fishermans' place. He wasn't there, out fishing of Tassy's west coast in 20M swells. In his tiny creek was a Couta boat, restored but it was built by his great grandfather and used for 40 years by 2 generations to make their living. No pics, no camera but very simple and spartan. He has the original rig but no sails.

Jet's owner, my son Peter, is in Spain - and then Di's gone off to gaol for a month, so he's turned to me as his new boss.

Greg also posted privately about that boat , and I gave him a detailed response.
But basically , that boat was on the market when I first started looking , maybe 6 years or more ago.
She was either taken off the market , or sold , but came back on the market maybe 2 years ago.
If you look on the thread I have put up on the Aussie WBF , you will see I mentioned her ages back.
Twice , at least.
I had intended checking her out when I went down to Tassie , but suddenly she was off the market , I assumed she had been sold.
I contacted the 3 boat brokers , telling them I was coming down , and I was in the market for a 28-30 ft cray boat.
The only broker that bothered to reply was BB of T , to tell me that they had a deceased estate coming up , a 30 footer , but that was all they could tell me at that stage.
I asked them if it had been advertised with another broker , they assured me it hadn't.
So , I went down , and checked out a few boats advertised privately , I checked out the boats all along the east coast and south , but got no advise from BB of T , till I got home.
Then they told me about her .
I've been following her for years , checking to see if she is still for sale , and when I've gone down there hoping to see her , they stuffed me around.
I wasn't happy , and told them so !.
But it was a very enlightening trip , and I made some very good contacts.
The biggest disappointment was that as I was coming in to LST , Kamada come on the market again.
If I had known , I would have bought her.
I didn't find out for a couple of days that she was on the market , by which time she had gone.
I saw a couple more Bernard Wilson boats , I would love to get a Kamada , or one of her sister ships.I saw one being prepared for new owners in Triabunna .
Ya never know , I have a very good man on the lookout.
This boat for sale , bloody hell , they knew I was coming down , surely they could have organised me to try her out !.
The previous broker told me she is NOT a motorsailer . Without trying her , I'm wondering if that is just a matter of definition , or interpretation.
There are a couple of other possibilities too , that could develop further.

Yes , she is quite a beamy boat Greg.
When I was interested in her before , I had a long talk with the builder Kevin Argent , and the owner at that time , and AD actually went over her for me , and gave her the thumbs up.
But Leyla baulked at spending $80,000 on my first up boat.
She had a point , but the reality is , by the time I had finished doing up HS , I wasn't much shy of that anyway.
I have a few photos of Kamada , from when she was for sale a couple of years ago , on my stupid site.
Apparently , if she had a fault , it's that she was slow , being so beamy.
But that is ok with me , I'm in no hurry.
