    Yes.

There was this little hole that let in a couple of litres of the sea in about an hour. I found the hole, right at the keel next to the mast support structure.

First up I dried it out in Adelaide sunshine then I removed a chunk of what looks like polyfilla. The ply around the chunk needed feathering back. Then it needed cutting back, and grinding back. Lots more patching came to light, several attempts worth, all of which seemed to have trapped water in the keel profile in the area from the king post back towards the main cockpit bulkhead.

So the really thin ply that these are made from consists of three wood laminates, the outers being of close grain, and a filler laminate of more porous wood. Sort of like a wick, in effect.

This is a progress shot that shows how far I've chased the rotting inner laminate in the plywood hull. I'm not at the outer edge of the rot yet. If/when the bow drops off we may be having a viking funeral. Otherwise I'll do my best to give her a few more years in the water. But it's defs terminal.

    Why Bootlegger?

I have a bakery on my verandah where I bake 24 sourdough loaves of bread each week. Very unofficial. It's called Frankk Fatt's Bootleg Bakery.

So the first project is half done. I chased out all the rot plus a bit of leeway into really long feathered edges of ply. Washed it all out with metho several times. Saturated all in West epoxy with fast hardener, and laid up several layers of coarse weave glass onto it all. The remaining shape indentations will be filled with a powder paste with that fancy West flexi wossname 1:1 stuff. Then after some Michelango shape carving I'll lay a fine glass cover cloth in epoxy over the lot. Oh, and paint.

My 69th birthday today. The clock ticks loudly. No point telling me what I should have done - its a 37 year old thin ply dinghy and I've saved it from the tip for now.

In good news, I've set some out and return coastal trip goals. I'm still hooked on the idea of distance sailing in tiny wooden boats. As with Romana, if it doesn't get to Glenelg and back I'll be disappointed.

    Opinions please.

Preamble: in Japanese kintsugi art a broken piece of pottery would be treasured, and the break highlighted with a gold line following the repaired break line.

Proposition: the repair to Bootlegger could be painted and ignored. Conversely it could be varnished and highlighted forever, as a 3 dimensional window into the living body and life of the boat structure. I am considering
    varnishing the finished repair.

    Sodesuna?

Sodesuna sounds good but paintinitsoona sounds better to me. Nevertheless, I look forward to hearing of the baker who sailed his kintsugi pot from Largs to Glenelg.

Damn good days sailing yesterday, no on wanted to come in, even the dedicated racers. Downside was a Nacra hull being nearly cut in half by another Nacra. Hot competition, and those things move fast!

Paintinitsoona sounded good in the end. Cut, cleaned, sterilised, massively strengthened, filled, fairished, glassed, taped and waiting for the resin to go off so I can trim, fair, fill and paint.

A sneak peek under the cover. I think the white patch-up area is a different white to the other white. I'm thinking that's ok. Maybe. I can make up some bs story about go-fast paint aft of the broken water of the bow turbulence, in case anyone mentions it.

This will get Bootlegger back in the water for the rest of the season. I'll roll and tip a coat over the whole underside when it's not sailing weather.

A good friend, and the mother of my youngest died today. It's been a stressful few days...so I would really appreciate it if no more friends died for a while.

I'm going to try to get the "Voyages of Arawana" thread down off the WB Forum server. Any tips on how to contact the Forum God (Scott?) for assistance?

No, I phrased it poorly. I want to export from the forum to a data format I can access offline on a personal computer - like pdf or something.

Carol rang me today, seems well enough and it seems Ellie has stepped up and as Carol says, "Wants to be the boss". Says she reminds her of Peter's mum.

Using the “Share” button in iOS (the square with the arrow pointing out of its top, to the right of the address bar), you can open the addressed forum topic in other formats. Eg, if you have GoodNotes installed, one of the options is “Open in Good Notes”, which converts the addressed forum topic into a PDF. Other apps may offer comparable functionality.

Actually, in Chrome, if you click on the thread address, you get a Share icon. Click on that and you get a Print icon. Then you can 'print' the thread as a PDF.
