Cartopper in the shed and finally under good cover and a space where I can work on it. Those of you who were at the Fingal EBS some years back will remember poor Peter capsizing it and needing help. The boat at present has zero built in flotation and a nasty habit of going over in a jybe and not coming back up. In other words its dangerous to the unwary.
My plan is to fit substantial flotation and an easy to manage lightweight Junk rig made from ripstop nylon and bamboo battens. Present rig is a leg O Mutton that can not be reefed or lowered once underway. The JR will solve that problem.
Also, had a long conversation with Purri this evening, was good to hear from him.

Good luck with the boat.
will that skinny bow have the buoyancy to manage a junk rig? Possible source of nasty gybe behaviour?
It's all fun and games until Darth Vader comes.
In any real wind I will be able to reef down to a panel or two which will bring the sail area right down low. Accidentally gybing a JR is not easy to do. You would have to get the wind forward of the beam to do it. It will be interesting to find out anyway.
Buoyancy shouldn't be a problem as the rig should not weigh much more than the original Leg O Mutton..

I'm not fussed about her hull shape re stability, looks quite tender. She'd sail on the chine angle, and after that it's straight in the drink in one more lurch. One of the club members had a planked skiff with a similar profile and she was a b…. to sail, dipping the rail under at the slightest provocation.
I've sailed a Cartopper in quite gusty conditions and as long as you stay very zen its good fun. The mast is right up in the bow and a gybe with the Leg O Mutton will put you over if you're not ready for it. Hence my desire to try a JR on it. I can base it on the Lug rig sail plan, which was Bolgers alternative sail plan for it. Personally I would prefer a different hull to play with but this is what I've got. Mirrors convert quite nicely to JR.

This is Peter and I taking it for a spin.
I was showing Peter how to sail it but after his dunking he didn't want to know about it. This one was built by a mate and I think the mast is a bit too thin. I noticed in another photo from that day that it had bend in it while under load.

All I need to do is use the measurements of the spritsail and make it into say 4 panels.

I was wondering what to use for a mast and then I realised I have 5ft offcuts from Redwings battens. I figure a 10ft mast which means 2 lengths. Now it just so happens I'd turned up a couple of wooden sleeves for these tubes so I could make a set of yacht legs...which of course I never got around to. So, I have an alloy mast that can break down into 2 x 5ft sections for easy stowage.![]()

This thread has become very quiet, everyone just busy doing other stuff I guess.

I'm still checking in, but nothing to contribute. Sorry. Boats and the sea have depressingly little involvement in my life at the moment.
It's good to see your projects. :-)
Came across these on the Wooden Boat Forum Facebook page.

Managed to get the cockpit cover back on Redwing, in drizzling rain no less.

Yes, still wrapped up in housebuilding projects so no boat action currentlySoon, I hope!
Let's see now, today's action was the hive mind decided that a squall and change was coming so the 4 boats up anchored and moved a mile across the Bay in rain in order to not be caught on a lee shore overnight, big move at 6 pm....then it dropped away so all for nothing. Probably.
Unless it comes up in the night... that would be vindication.
42c, low humidity and mostly still with a few fitful northerly breezes. Sky is beginning to look thundery but no rain forecast.
I've been asked if I would be willing to build a birdsmouth mast for $2,500 all up.

Beautiful!!
Okayed, anyone know a woodworker in Vic, Southern NSW or SA that could build an 11m birdsmouth mast ?

nope, not me.

Something weird has happened with my eye. Thursday night it felt like something moved on the eye, now it's bloodshot and the vision has deteriorated quite a lot. I'm going to have to get it looked at tomorrow.

So nobody knows of any timber boat yards or woodworkers who would possibly be interested in building a birdsmouth mast down Victoria/ SA way?

We got a camp site at Wilson’s Prom this morning so we packed up the gear and now we are set up with our van and a tarp. Usually you have to enter the ballot to get a camp site. Blowing 40 knots westerly out at Hogan Island but we are sheltered by the coastal dunes and scrub from a 25-30 knot westerly. Got the fishing rod and a few good books.
