Hi
As we are house sitting now untill about 20 August we thought we must have some of our art on the walls. This painting is Tui of Opua with the replica of Flinders Norfolk at Toronto NSW about 20 years ago.

Hi,
Thelma has completed the refinishing our saloon table now ready for installation.

The top bar hives let bees make comb as they would without a human defining the space so much. If you look at comb hanging down in a feral hive it's sloped sides, and doesn't go mad if there's plenty of space. The hive in a tbh has movable divider boards that let the bee carer give them more space as they need it. If they do build down and glue the comb onto the sloping sides it only takes a run down the sides with a metal hive tool to release each comb.
If you're interested to see how it's done well check out the videos by a pom Phil Chandler on youtube. The Aussie equivalent guru is Adrian Iodece in Vic. Plenty of local info to search under his name too.
I'm not aware of very regular maintenance being needed, if regular maintenance is done rightbut ask me in two years and see how I've got on.

When I first joined WBF they made me write a book to prove I was a real yachty. I was so gullible.
Had a bit of an argument with an attitudinal 20 something the other day and noticed yesterday our mailbox has been trashed again.

I can't find any thread about Phil's health but when I looked up his posts, it says he's banned! Why would anyone ban Phil??
Anyway Phil, if you're reading this, get well SOON and I hope all's going well! I also hope the ban doesn't last long!

Banned? For what?

Phil banned? Get outa here.
Well, I really hope he changes his mind. The voice of reason, is Phil.
After, how many years? we finally get to the point where this thread is mostly about boats, and now we lose Phil?? This should not happen!

My sweet gentle woman who calls me husband got banned from Facebook briefly. An antivaxxer person got up her nose so far she called them a murderer. Facebook police contacted her and in the dialogue about why it had happened my dearest declared that she was in the right because the other person is indeed a murderer.
The virtual door slammed. But later on they let her back in.
I hope Phil reconsiders, assuming it's not a permaban.

I'm a bit shocked, it's akin to being told Santa kicks puppies.

Lets hope he reconsiders, of course some of the posters here are despicable people, but they are their own punishment and not worth being banned for. It's a hard task for WB Admin at the moment.

Can't believe Phil is banned.
I've never seen him come close to being anything like the aerosols that do stick their heads on this forum - and he owns a genuine woodenboat!! And works on it - and tells us about it!
I hope he comes back.
I think Purri is off the hook now - i wonder is the forum just not worth it now that his nemesis has taken his bat and ball away?
It's all fun and games until Darth Vader comes.
My father in law is a bee keeper - he's not convinced by the Top Bar hive.
But his own boxes are getting too big and heavy for him to move around and look after comfortably.
I wonder would the TBH set up, including the use of his own frames (stuff he's used to), make life easier. Turn bee keeping into bench-level work.
Separating the queen would be tricky...... would need to make a frame internally to take a separator......
I've got an itch i need to scratch!

I think we're going to have to lobby Bruce Moffatt to take a trip up into them thar hills or down to that thar wharf and twist Phil's arm. We can't have an Antipodean thread without Phil.
I'm still hoping Greg will come back one day too.

Re Phil and his banning
The American end of this forum is as screwed as the country itself. It'll get worse before it gets better. But this virus and it's evolved variations have the capacity to change what we have known as civilisation for good. Into what it's hard to say at present, but if we look to Europe and feudal society after the Black Death…
"The outbreak of plague in Europe between 1347-1352 CE – known as the Black Death – completely changed the world of medieval Europe. Severe depopulation upset the socio-economic feudal system of the time but the experience of the plague itself affected every aspect of people’s lives. Disease on an epidemic scale was simply part of life in the Middle Ages but a pandemic of the severity of the Black Death had never been experienced before and, afterwards, there was no way for the people to resume life as they had previously known it. The Black Death altered the fundamental paradigm of European life in the following areas:
- Socio-Economic
- Medical Knowledge and Practice
- Religious Belief and Practice
- Persecution and Migration
- Women’s Rights
- Art & Architecture"

Read on.
Now, back to boats….
Do you recall the laminated drop in rowing setup the Derwent skiffs use?
I intend to build a similar setup for the Macgreggor canoe, but extended to include a movable, tiltable mast setup for a lateen rig. In the design stage.

Jeff I'd love to see the Mac with a rowing setup like that. I've also had a very long admiration for the lateen. Please proceed and pepper the forum with text and photos.

Wot's all this about Purri's Nemesis upping stumps?
And Greg?? No! That's a genuine loss.
I do owe Phil a visit or ten.
I turn my back for five minutes...

Hey Jeff that sounds awesome can’t wait to see what you’ll come up with.
Phil I do hope you will reconsider .Don’t let one of those ideologically twisted narcissist get the better of you.
+1 to all posts since my last one!

I had considered a SOF dinghy having most of the materials and fittings, but already having the Mac and sail I think the drop in outrigger is a better use of the time. I already have rowlocks on it but at 32" beam it's a bit narrow for convenient rowing. Side decks will make it simpler and the existing bronze rowlocks will be good for locating pins. I have a sliding seat and I reckon that can be built into the insert. Sorting a variable angled unstayed mast is the major problem, the sail will be a dipping lateen I reckon. Main yard a bundle of bamboo is the present plan if I can source sticks long enough.
