Even if the lockdown remains in place by then, can't you still haul out? Or would you not be permitted to sail over to the yard?

Essentially once I am in NSW I can do what I like, the problem arises when traveling back across the Queensland border.

My interpretation indicates a haul out may not be considered an essential service, and our Premier has instructed us all to stay in our Village. I’ll have to deal with it when the time comes.

Where did you come by this pic? I've been looking at that since you posted it. One time a boat was in fremantle harbour, looked much like that, but of course she had her sails all furled away. It was years ago, but that seriously ugly super structure is fairly unique... which makes me think it might be the same boat.

Gary , Nice photo , how are the 2 junk fore sails sheeted in so tight ?. There doesn't seem to be much room between the luffs and fore masts for spans and sheets.
The mizzen looks to have one panel reefed.

Correct on the mizzen.
Two possibilities on the sheeting:
1 there may be some foreshortening in the photo which would make the leach of each sail seem closer to the mast behind.
2 The main and foresail may have double sheeting, which means a set of sheetlets either side of the sail.

This covid thing looks to having a bad effect on everything. I’ve been waiting on pintles and gudgeons since Feb, cleats and boom fittings since early March, and on my last couple of trips to the chandlery in the hopes of getting epoxy they had none.

Ironically the owner of the chandlery said they weren’t ordering anything as there were no customers, which was true on account of them not having ordered anything and having very little stock.

For epoxy try Boatcraft Pacific they are still operating. Botecote epoxy.

Unfortunately there's very little in the movie about boats, sailing or any of the other sailors. There's a good documentary about the race, and Crowhurst, called Deep Water. The book A Voyage for Madmen is also very good.

I never know what to think about the outcome... clearly Moitessier was the ultimate seaman... and Knox Johnson sort of only won because Moitessier let him do so... but on the other hand Knox Johnson's boat had shocking problems including no fresh water, so maybe 'Sir' was a sort of ocean going Rambo type... but neither of them was Australian and therefore can't really be taken too seriously... and that in its self is silly because Australians aren't all that serious about anything (least they' weren't in my generation, the young'n's seem a bit clenched up)...

Knox Johnson wrote a terrific book about the race. So did Moitessier. Knox Johnson donated his winnings to Crowhurst's family. Arguably Nigel Tetley should have won the race but was seriously misled by Crowhurst's false reports of progress. Joshua was obviously a much faster boat than Suhaili but KJ deserved his win, in my opinion.

I'm out of Tonic for the gin and now I'm out of scotch till Friday...two whole days. This social isolation is hell I tell ya! Anyway the project has moved on and now I'm up to the foot bridge stage. The tree is down cut into lengths and mostly debarked. One of them is halfway across the yard via block and tackle. Photos soon.

Bugger. Just got an email from the chandlery. The pintles and gudgeons I’ve had on order since Feb are out of stock at the foundry in the UK, and the foundry has had to close because of Covid.

So no idea when I’m gonna get them.

Hi Suzyj.

When I started to build Tui of Opua (Vertue class sloop) wanted to have cast bronze floors rather than the wrought iron specified by LG&P. As I lived in the Newcastle area there were a number of foundries that serviced the large industrial companies BHP, Comsteel etc. I knew of a small foundry that was casting bronze peices upto 200kg. I went in to see the owner with my plans from LG&P and asked how I should go about making the patterns. He took about 1 hour to explain the process to me and then said to bring the first 5 or 6 patterns in and he would explain were I was going wrong. He was right of course I had made some mistakes which he pointed out. Then he advised me to go and purchase a pattern maker square which is 87 degrees rather than 90 degrees and will give you the correct draw angle allowing it easy to withdraw the pattern fron the sand box. Over the years I developed a reasonable skill in pattern making which allowed me to make castings that were more complicated to the point that the owner of the foundry allowed me to fit the patterns into the sand boxes and set the box ready for the molton metal. I did learn a lot from this part of yacht building ( I trained as a communication technician back in the 60's so no training in baotbuilding)

I did find that the process of preparing the bronze to pour into the molds involves adding to the stock say aluminium bronze a chemical which allow the molton metal to flow easily and it was this part that I was not a party to maybe trade secrets

With your experiences woking with wood you will have no difficulty making the patterns, if you need to cast a hole in a casting you need to make a core and thats were I found it became a lot more complicated. If the hole is up to 20mm forget the core and drill it out after casting.

You may find it hard to find a foundry in your area but I'm sure you will, most of the time they are down rough lanes in dirty buildings. We still have some in Sydney.

Atfter tapping all of the above I have just remembered the name of the company in Melbourne the we got our opening ports from it was Briggs Marine (ports were about $450 each and we have 8). Either way you will have success and good pattern making you will find it rewarding
