I'm also thinking along those lines. A twisting shaft in a key slot, type of thing, rather than a threaded nut though, I think, because I want to be able to undo it and do it up very quickly and easily, and without tools.

A lashing could meet the requirements of speed and toollessness, but maybe not the nothing sticking up requirement.
Toggles could work. Could something stick up through the middle... I'm thinking of old fashioned car air filters which typically had a round housing with a single central bolt passing through the cover with a washer and wing nut on top, but yours could just be a toggle. Maybe the hinges are not needed, that just sounds like a complication.

Well, the windlass is under the cover so that wouldn't really be possible. The hinges allow it to be swung out of the way when I don't want to remove it. No, I want a clip-type arrangement rather than lashing or shock cord.

Hard to see how that could be done without something attached to the deck. Would it be allowable to have something recessed into the deck?

Hatch dog in the top of the cover that latches onto the windlass itself.
Pin through the side of the cover into the windlass.
You aren't going to kick the windlass itself, glue a coaming on the deck opposite the hinge side or 3 sides close up as practical, hardwood , pin or latch into that.

Balia had a fitting a bit like that in her foredeck. Almost like a bayonet light fitting but not quite in her case. In fact the way it's configured I've never been able to work out what the heck it was for. I suspect a removable bowsprit as the stem fitting has a round thing in it, cranse iron? And this fitting was directly behind that. But it's not quite like a bayonet fitting. Weird.

Thanks, I think latching onto the windlass itself would be tricky as the windlass has all smooth, curvy edges. But a tab or coaming next to the windlass, inside the cover is another idea I've been thinking about too. I'm still not sure how to secure a pin or pins though, in a neat way. Maybe a little coaming with a tab that comes through the cover and a barrel bolt on the cover? The next step will be sitting the cover in place on the boat and looking at toe-damage-proof options, I think.

Yes, they're the hinges I've ordered. So, I haven't actually seen these hinges yet but, are you saying that I could have hinges on each side, and just pull the pin on one side to release? I'll wait til they arrive and see if that could work. Could be a good option! Unfortunate that they're the most expensive bloody hinges on the planet! I don't mind if I end up with spares though as I'll also be using them for the companionway ladder I'm building soon.

I like the idea of the hinges on each side as I want the cover to be secure and strong. The old windlass was a nuisance in the bow but it also served as something to brace against. I've over-built the new cover so that it's strong enough to serve that purpose. The sides have 6 layers of 450g double bias glass and the rest has 5 layers. It's roomy enough to beef it up more by laying more glass inside if necessary.

I think I could make that work but I just don't think it would be secure enough. If the pins in the separating hinges I'm getting aren't too fiddly then I think I might go with Neil's suggestion of hinges on both sides. The pins are spring loaded so they don't detach.

I think you should completely rebuild the foredeck. Go for a flush deck with the winch recessed. Build a self draining anchor locker below. 😜

That's a great idea of Neils. Got em in three places on Riada. That general type of latch pictured is what's used on anchor wells so I think if you select out the best of the type it'll be secure . The worst that can happen is you lose the hatch but the boat isn't compromised eh.
A lanyard on the hatch would be good security for that o crap I just kicked it over the side moment.

These are a quality classic bronze Kiwi designed hinge , been around for many years, the spring loaded captive pin enables them to be separated. They are left and right handed , so sold as a pair.

You will remember the quality long after you forget the price !!

Speaking for myself I would want my windlass to be securely mounted to my foredeck. Then again not everyone has enough confidence in the mounting integrity of their windlass and foredeck or is brave enough to attempt lifting what amounted to well over half a ton when setting WB mooring block.

I find I rarely use my windlass and in my opinion it can be eliminated altogether with powered vessels that are able to break out an anchor providing one is still able to utilise 5/16” high tensile chain consisting of no more than 75 feet.

Just check your depth sounder and don’t commit the rookie error of attempting to anchor in 25 meters of water because with the combined weight of your anchor you will get a good work out.

Don't thing so. She originally had twin forestays for Tradewinds sailing, and a fixed inner. Good thought though. I'll see if I have the fitting here at home. It really makes no sense to me.

Curiouser and curiouser. It's pretty robust and not small. Maybe 4 inches diameter and 6 inches deep. 1 inch tube. I now see it was bunged up with a champagne cork, wrapped in electrical tape, with some white sealant blobbed on top. It never filled with water because that all just fell out when I explored it with a screwdriver. There's some sort of thread in one side of the relief on the top plate. And the hole midway down the tube is threaded, as though to take a grub screw. I'm still thinking removable bowsprit. It was positioned just in front of the Sampson post. You can see in the last photo the stem head fitting with a nice round hole which could well take a bowsprit.

I love it and after the last flood some very good stone has been uncovered. I get a kick out of working with it, particularly in dry stone construction.
