I know. I was being funny. South Australians are famously sensitive about being known for our grizzly murder cases. Snowtown is where someone stored some dead bodies in 200 litre drums in a disused bank building. I know you didn't actually mention that. Part of the humour in my post was me mentioning it when you actually hadn't. It's been a few hot days and we have a neighbour with a big dog that's been barking all night. Although not last night. Which was good.

We on the East Coast are much too PC to actually mention the murders. So, I guess being South Australian, you could probably get away with putting the dog in a barrel?

Sorry about the bees Bruce! This weather is really terrible - hope it ends soon!

We have a fire maybe 10-20 km upwind of us. I've put sprinklers on the roof of the house and the shed and all around in the garden. Our whole property is green and the grass is mowed as we are preparing to host a friend's wedding reception in our bottom paddock on 11 January. Generator is ready to fire up if the power goes out. But that will leave us with less water as it can't run the 3 phase bore pump. Residents have been advised that now is a good time to leave if leaving is your plan. Our plan is to stay. Nervously waiting but we are as well prepared as we can be. As a last resort we have open green space and woollen blankets if required.

Good luck Phil and stay safe. Green grass doesn't seem to be a deterrent once it gets going.
Very warm and humid here. The sky looks overcast but the sunlight has an orange tinge to it.

All good so far and with the change coming through it will be heading away from us. They are saying quitee a few houses lost. One person dead in a vehicle accident and one missing.

"Green grass"??? Since when was grass green? As far as we can remember around here, it's sort of brown or yellow looking if there's any at all, although the old fellers reckon it was green when they were kids. The greenest thing in our place is the water, now that the river has been hit with blue-green algae.

Good luck with the fires, Phil. We've had them sitting 20ks away for a while now, but they seem to be lurking in the canyons.

I never imagined Adelaide to be under fire threat, we discussed it didn't we? Did we?
Anyway, I hope it stays away.

Did we? The hills are a fire risk every summer. Hot and very dry.

    It's so hot. It's incredible.
It's not Smokey today, a bit, but nothing like yesterday.
The sunlight is a rosey pink. Pretty and ominous.

Highway is closed. We've got rello's coming from Canberra for Chrissie. They're running out of route options.
Coming up from the south is problematic, with the fire through Braidwood.

It's beginning to feel quite insane.

Hot inland from here but not right here. Best wishes to Gypsie and all others close to fire areas at present.

The Adelaide area has always had a bad reputation for fires, hasn't it? Wasn't Black Friday or Saturday in the Hills?

Looking for a snorkler who was found at his car later. He had been caught out by the ebb tide and swept down river. He made it to shore, walked to the road and hitchhiked back to his car.

I was once 'found' by a search party half way through my annual 10 day ski tour. At the time ski tourers were thin on the snow and I was, as usual, out by myself. They were looking for someone else.
I was actually a member of a resorts search and rescue squad at the time and was on a sort of 'busmans holiday'.

Speaking of being found the rain has finally arrived on the Goldie combined with heavy thunder storms. We may receive up to 200 mm ,feeling for the poor buggers camping out and worse our Southern brothers that desperately require the deluge to quell all those fires. Rather cool tonight around 25C.

Wising you all a very Merry Christmas and a healthy New Year

It would be nice to have this kind of money, although I really wouldn't want such a grand boat:

Just checking out feathering prop given to me subject to fitting on WB from Marcus builder of the gorgeous Gaff rigged ranger.
It may have to be shortened a little, can that be done without creating problems ?..

I think it'd be wise to talk to a prop company about that. Prop performance is important in relation to keeping the engine healthy, they tell me. So, skimping on prop suitability might be false economy. But, if it can be done appropriately, then it seems like a good idea to me! Feathering and folding props usually have interchangeable blades.

Well, the big race is underway and, because there'll be strong NE late in the race, the oldest boat, also smaller, is one of the favourites to win. That would be nice to see.

Did I read that right? Cyclone threatening to form off Fiji will have 65 kmh winds. What's that, 40 knots? A bit windy, but hardly a National Disaster.

Actually only 35 knots. I reckon you read it right but, unfortunately, I think there's probably a mix up there! Let's hope that 65 kph is correct though!

The line honours leaders have hit light wind now. Comanche is down to about 3 knots but WO XI is running at about 9, so taking advantage.
