I suppose if you have to ask what a compass plane is, you will probably have no use for one.

A plane with a base that's adjustable for planing concave or convex curves. I use mine rarely as I usually make up curved templates for the router or trimmer but, it's a great tool to have when you really need one! I'd think it would be an essential tool for anyone planking a boat!

I reckon Jeff gets the Antipodean of the Month award for giving Bernadette his only compass plane!
Rick
Ah, that's good! Now I can give the award to Phil instead for sending me a jar of bronze nails!
Rick
^ oops....
sorry Jeff.
my bad.
Jeff is certainly a very generous fellow - we've seen many terrific examples of that over the years.
Rick
I'm good with spoke shaves Bernie, I have a few concave and convex models of various ages.
Rebuilding carriage wheels gives you plenty of practice. I'm repairing a curved spiral section of stair rail, Aussie red cedar. I'm glad I'm only repairing it, not trying to make it from scratch!

Just bought a Canon OES 400D DSLR camera for $80. I've been wanting a half decent camera for quite a while.

What will you seal it with Rick?

Tung oil.

Yes, it's really nice wood. I've had the slab stored in my shed for about 4 years but it was stored before that at the mill for about 10 years, possibly 20. Quite hard, yes!

I was on duty yesterday. We crossed a comparatively flat bar into a confused sea and cross swell, which was fine while we were moving. However we spent sometime not under way while trainees got some practice throwing the life ring. It's rare but I actually felt a bit queasy.
And now the weather report. Good rain last night, today is overcast and a predicted thunderstorm later this evening. Which will coincide with the Xmas party on the wharf.

What would be the recommended bedding compound for outboard hung stainless chain plates, that is readily available in Australia?
Ive been mulling that question over Tom, since you posted it on your other thread. I dont trust Sika at all. Fixtech seems to be better. Ive tried Selleys butyl in a tube. In SA it dries hard. In Qld I dont know. I have some tubes of Sika Butyl, which they claim they no longer make, but you can buy from an online NZ yacht shop. I havent used any, because I dont trust Sika. Im generally trying butyl rubber, specifically a plumbers butyl from Bunnings. Seems to stay soft and flexible, which is good. Sticks like sh!t to a blanket which is also good. Cant tell you how it will be in 5 or 10 years, but fingers crossed. Im not sure what its like to paint over, but if you trim any squeeze out, that wouldnt be much of an issue. Im partly putting off completing my deck project because I dont trust any sealants.
Neil likes the Sika Mastic, I think. I have some and have used a little bit and it seems fine to me too. But I think any bedding, Sika, Fixtech, butyl tape ... ought to be fine in that situation. You just don't want anything that's going to keep bleeding out. I'd probably use Sikaflex or Fixtech sealant as they both go solid.

I was going to scrub the prop and change the shaft anode to day but it's blowing a gale. Too much chop means I'd probably get brained doing it so I'll just have to find something else to do .... That's not very hard.
Rick
Thanks Rick and Phil for your input.
Since there is still a reasonable bedding surface left over I may just concentrate on sealing the fastner holes underneath the straps and the square holes I filed into the stainless straps to receive the stainless coach bolts.
I will see what Bunnings can come up with and if using Sika will probably just hand tighten them then let it set up for a couple of hours followed by cranking the nuts down hard.

Did the anode. We took the boat to the wharf at Lemon Tree to get out of the chop. It was still choppy though and visibility was about 200mm so not much fun. Anyway, it's done and it:s nice out on the water in a gale!

My dog called Bear is keeping me sane. Reserve a spot for me here until I return.

When I first joined WBF they made me write a book to prove I was a real yachty. I was so gullible.
Gales here too with squalls, SW at speeds round 90-100k's.
With our trees a bit tooo dangerous for gardening.
G'day Bruce, good looking dog.
That dog has eyes that tell a story.
Best wishes Bruce.
All the best Bruce! Woody is the stabilising influence in my life - which might explain lots.
