Quite cool here, which is nice. I hope no fires flare up anywhere near any of you, or us.

Yesterday I took time out and paddled the kayak with some friends up the Myall River from Tea Gardens. Started off in a smoky haze but the SE kicked in and blew the smoke away from us. A really nice day.

Planning on a trip to WA Sept-Oct next, myself and my son but I'm finding the whole fare search business daunting. I don't want to take 10 hours to get there and I don't want to get there at 1am. Trying to keep the return airfare under $700 if I can...any suggestions?

Brilliant days sailing today, Plenty of breeze swinging from SW to SSE as the day wore on and strengthening from 10 to 17 kts. No sand bar so we had the whole expanse of the estuary to sail except the bottom of the tide.

I feel like my deck rebuild is on hold for the moment. I seem to be working more than I would like. And we are hosting a wedding in a paddock at our place in mid January which seems to have brought on a whole bunch of new projects. Plus there's the reluctance to make any holes in the new deck! After the wedding, I think I will get back to it.

I'll be 'renovating' our deck this summer. The builders used a few too many short ends for my liking and at 9 years or so it's showing.

I'm about to replace the decking at our house, though. I'll use decking nails - they're the twisted ones with a big head (why does that sound familiar?). I won't punch them in, though. This has the disadvantage that it leaves sem-eposed/proud heads but it has the big advantage of protecting the timber around the nails.

I'm using really thick boards - about 35mm - so if I was going to screw them in, I'd use those big bugle type screws with hex drive. I might end up using them anyway, yet.

Actually, yes! We've used copper cladding on part of the house and bronze ring nails would be good for fastening it - if you're serious!

The trouble is most of them are still embedded in a trailer full of scrap wood which we will use as kindling over the winter. I probably won't sift them out of the ashes. I do have a litre or so that came out one way or another. PM me your address and I'll send them.

I just found out that Peter passed away awhile back...
this is indeed sad news as I had thought he had the cancer beat.
in any case, thanks to those who wrote here about Peter's last days and for holding his hand at the bedside. that takes some courage.
ive done palliative nursing and its dreadful at its best when so close to the end. to be able to offer some comfort is a remarkable gesture.

Peter...another reminder of the frailty of life
and yet a beautiful demonstration of a life selflessly lived for his family.
goodbye Peter. im sorry I wont get the chance to take you sailing on my new yacht.

the loss of a friend is incredible for sure...hard to imagine at times and each day leaves you floating in a big empty sphere...gentle reminders can ease some of the pain. Peter will always be remembered for good and noble things.

Ive always sidestepped politics in life simply because it does alter the human equation...

boat project is stalled yet again but I'll be back on it with gusto next year. starting to get closer to the interior fit out so thats a good thing.

I thought you had other compass planes on hand? surely?
