I started the engine. Fired up first turn of the key and purrs like a kitten with good water flow out the exhaust.

Which wouldn't be good if it was a kitten.

Unless you wanted a rapidly expanding kitten. Which you probably wouldn't.

There's nothing quite like the rush of broad reach surfing a cat south into Sydney Harbour in a building nor'easter, four metre rooster tails off each hull, too much sail up to safely round up and reef, and hoping like mad there's enough dead air when you charge into the lee of North Head. Or when the gybe when you start to do that turn into the Sydney Harbour has your pucker muscles lock your arse down to the deck like a toilet plunger. Cats are ok I guess.

Our estuary is far more suited to sailing small cats than small dinghies these days.

Driving down there this evening for the last/first regatta meeting there was a big yellow harvest moon.

Interesting cockpit, from one of Tad Roberts posts on farcebook. Narrow like mine. The cutouts either side of the wheel would help with movement fore and aft, but I can't do that because it would block the passages to the aft cabin below deck. The engine controls set into the cockpit coaming could work for me though. Although my coamings, if I do them, will be set out a bit more. Maybe I could set the lever into a recess down low in the cockpit side but even that recess would impinge quite a bit on the below deck passages. I will think about this more today.

Could you put the controller behind you, on the aft coaming? You'd soon get used to it.

At the moment there is no aft coaming. Front of the aft cabin? I think it would be in the way. That is where you lean when standing at the helm, and also the mainsheet is all over it. Major tangles.

Geez, you have a wheel...put the throttle and gears where you can reach it without looking away. That way at least you can see what yer hitting. I mean, that's what I did.

Yeah that's what I had. Very handy in terms of control. But every single time anyone other than me moves from behind the wheel to in front they hit the throttle lever and I have heart palpitations thinking the engine has died.

The palpitations are an aid to staying awake. I respectfully suggest your focus is wrong. The important detail is a secure coffee cup holder. Possibly also a nice place for a tray of horses doovers within reach of the helm.

Get them to go around the other way. That way you'll know the engine hasn't died.

After messing about with rolling on the paint job on comet I decided to spray her. I needed an even coat of grey primer to help with the colour according to the paint supplier. (Norglass) I was rolling one day, sanding the next, rolling one day, sanding the next. It was driving me mad and winter was approaching.
So... 3 coats wet on wet of primer in one day, sand 2 days later then 2 topcoats the next day, again, wet on wet. I reckon I saved 6 days work not having to sand between coats.
    IMG_6156.jpg
Action shot. I walked from bow to stern in one swoop half overlapping each coat.
The hardest part was seeing where I had been while applying the second coat.
    IMG_6150.jpg
2 coats with autobarns finest spray gun. $80. I put some flattening agent into the mix as I wanted a semi gloss finish.
We now have a green Comet

Haha. That whole side from the rub rail down took 6 minutes for one coat. (I had some planks set up to do above the rub rail)
I would never roll and tip a boat now I've done this. Way too much work! Wet on wet all the way.

That's fantastic! And looks great! You've done a fine job!

None of the boatyards around here allow spraying at all now, unless you book the boat into their shed, at enormous cost. But at least with the paint I use, I don't need to sand between coats - just sand the primer. But spraying would be so much easier!

This yard has not long changed hands. I can see it not too long in the future they bring that in here too.
I didn't ask either way and did it on a Sunday, when the manager wasn't around.

Easier to apologise than to ask permission. Although I expect there's some government inspector who'd be happy to fine you a million dollars and shut down the yard.
