Yes Balia is a Bluebird of Thorne design. And yes, its an extraordinary coincidence that of I think 3 in the world, 2 were built in Australia and now live in the same marina. There is one other floating around, claiming to be a Bluebird, but shes bigger. Bluebird based I guess. And there are earlier designs which were called Bluebird, and had the twin keel thing going, but are quite different boats. No she doesnt have the wishbone booms which were part of the original sailplan so I cant answer the questions about the details. Balia is vangless. The boom weighs about a ton which helps. But she could do with a vang. 1970's roller reefing. Ugh.

I thought it was supposed to be an Arthur Robb design.

Tis. I sailed with a man who was very good friends with Arthur Robb, Stayed with him in J.O.E when on leave during the war. I wish I could have recorded everything he said that weekend and on other day races etc.

How is it a Thorne design and a Robb design?

Its not a Thorne design. I dont know if there is a Thorne. Arthur Robb designed a number of boats, all called Bluebird of Thorne. All at the behest of a Lord Riverdale, who had a thing about twin keels.

IIRC , the Bluebird of Thorne design was a collaboration between Lord Riverdale and Arthur Robb.

In the early 1970's the original steel Bluebird of Thorne was sailed to NZ . For many months she was berthed in Westhaven Auckland . Lord Riverdale returned to the UK and left the yacht in Auckland for sale. My friend looked at buying it , from memory she had an impressive Gardner diesel , but there were signs of rust in the interior. He wisely went on to build a cold molded kauri 47' Lidgard which after 40+ years has no 'rust' !

And the original, which was riveted steel plate was eventually rebuilt and is still sailing in Nova Scotia or somewhere. We don't have rust either, Balia is strip planked celery top pine. The other one is round bilge steel with aluminium deck. Looks to be in good condition, has been for sale for quite a while now.

Ah, `Bluebird of Thorne' design, not `Bluebird' of Thorne design. The penny dropped. Yes, I was wondering who Thorne was ...

Question about moorings in your part of the world. What do they cost? Not for the ground tackle so much as the space. Is there a trade in approved mooring spaces? Or is it just a matter of picking a spot, getting a permit and dropping some ground tackle? Are moorings available for rent? At what cost? Context-we sold our mooring in Franklin when we brought the boat to Adelaide. We will probably take her back there one day, after the deck is done. Either premanently or no a back and forth basis. Thinking of getting a mooring down there.

This one is documented as a Towns build
. Interesting bit of history George Towns also held the World Single Skulls World Championship from 1901 to 1907. He was the last of seven AWSC who dominated the sport from 1876 to 1907.

Tokelau’s owner indicates she is light he is able to lift the ends, she is tight but leaks several buckets when launched, has had a small previously bogged transom repair, using epoxy, several stainless rivets one small plank split near transom and no Sitka used on plank lands., but has shrunk in length from a former 16’4” to16’1”. Would you have any concerns with the any defects listed ?

I would if utility was the purpose, I assumed it was a modern glued lap clinker and you'd be able to move it and use it when you wanted. Should have read or looked closer.
If its an artifact that you take out a couple of times a year or leave in the water so its tight, then maybe.

Serviced November I think he said, various wear parts replaced. Looks to be solid. had a slightly smaller boat than mine, 40 feet, 17 tons I think. Ill probably see if I can rent it to someone until I want it. I paid $3000 for the mooring. Thats the gear and the spot. They seem to rent for about $20-25 a week. Not a bad return I reckon. And I have a feeling that moorings in Tassie are going to become hot property. Most mooring fields are closed to new moorings. New moorings since 2014 cant be transferred, whereas ones approved pre 2014 can, they are more like actual property. So, strong rental returns and capital gain. Anyway, heres hoping.

We've had a series of cool, fine windless days. Another, but a breeze came up, the tide came in I sailed off, and the wind dropped.
Made it back before the tide went out but did not get much sailing in.

Did I say I've done a sleep test thing? I may have a solution to your snoring problem next trip.

I think it's a good idea. iirc the few permanent moorings that can be sold around the yacht clubs in melbourne are listed for sale for $10-20k when they come up. i don't need a mooring in tasmania yet however,

Been raining all night, light mostly but welcome. Off to work on the boat today and luckily the job is internal, I’m fitting backing blocks for the pushpit.

So I did this sleep test thing. Actually I did it twice. The results came in today.

Yay they don't say anything about snoring.

Boo they say I have severe obstructive sleep apnoea. Apparently when I'm in what should be a deep sleep I have around 50 episodes of choking an hour. Each choking episode involves me not breathing for around 30 seconds. In rough terms I spend 30 seconds every minute not breathing, choking, waking then 30 seconds gasping and recovering my breath.

I am seeing a specialist to discuss the implications, and starting a one month trial of a CPAP machine use to see how effective one of those would be.

The person who gave me the results was surprised that I drive. Also that I'm not dead yet. Ha! What would experts know??!!

My nose operation helped. I still wake up tired most of the time but at least my mind is reasonably clear. My problem is the number of times I need to pee during the night.

Bruce, very pleased to hear that the medical specialists have worked out that you're not dead yet. It also sounds like it might be a good idea to decline the offer of a berth on Balia if you want to maintain that health status.
