It was kinda funny 30 people on a 3 hour charter cruze shades of Gilligans Island as the storm clouds brewed. We only motored as I couldn't convince the skipper to set any sails......can't imagine why. Anyway a good time was had by all apart from one poor soul who was calling for Ruth and despite getting drenched.

Surf down your way portland? It's flat as a board here, no surf at all. Early today we had a big downpour, very tropical and now it's hot and humid again.

Yes , big time surf , especially tonight , and in the morning.
I haven't been down to see HS today , but I can hear the surf from here , booming in.
It can't be very pleasant down there though , because all of the slickers are going home early.
If I had a bigger boat though , I'd go out.
I've been out in some pretty rough weather , and been very impressed with the old time crays boats coming home . They are wet well boats , and sit low in the water , and seem almost serene , as they motor home .
We had a front come through a little while ago , but its settled down a bit now. Another rain squall as I type.
My new boat will need a good wheelhouse.

There was a really heavy wet well cray boat for sale during the Hobart show. Built on a beach, about 60 years old and down below was like a petrified forest, rough grown and adze-shaped timbers with the bark still on in places, bolted together to make the necessary curves. Not quit symmetrical, in fact not quite at all but she seems to have had a long ongoing working life.

The size is the same (only 1.5 sq ft difference)
Cant find the specs for height of mast gaff and boom.

Herons can have either a gaff rig or bermudan rig so you'd first need to see which setup your sail is made for. There's a National Heron Association website that has all the legal dimensions.

Gee , we are certainly making our mark on this place.
The P.O. had cats , and used lots of sprays around the place , as a concequence there was surprisingly little or no bird life.
And even though he had access to water , he rarely used it.
We have planted a lot more in the 2 acre garden , increased it by 1/2 an acre , kept it well watered , no cats , and no sprays.
And we are seeing the results of it now , the place is teeming with bird life !.
I've just been for a walk through the trees , very late in the afternoon , and there must be hundreds of birds here.
very nice , very satisfying .
So much colour in the garden , attracting so much colour in the bird life.
And Koalas .
And 'roos and wallabies.
I wish the last 3 would stay away.
Not so much because of the damage they do , but a good percentage of them finish up as road kill.

It's got a ropey edge to the mast side so I'm guessing a gaff rig. Stevebaby sent it to me.
The problem is mere finding dimentions of the Mirror, there's not a lot out there.
I guess I can take it with me next time I go out to the club where my boat is and try it out and see how it sets.

Our birdlife is remarkable Rob, we fenced out the cows years ago and as the place became more and more overgrown all the ground nesting birds arrived but we had huge numbers of cats .
I shot about 18 of them but then cane toads arrived and massacred the snake population and also the cat population . The bird population boomed .

Now you need to get rid of the cane toads !.
I was going to go up to the Kimberlies with a group of Vietnam Vets to help out , but arthritis stopped me.
However , I have kept in touch , the latest is that they are infecting cane toads with lungworm , and that is slowing them down.

Cats and rabbits don't last long here .
We have 8 horses too , on the pastures . Actually one old boy with no teeth is allowed to wonder around the new garden , he does no harm , and just eats the softest clovers.
I'm putting in windbreaks with boat building timbers , but I'll never see the benefit of them.

The cane toads are far, far less common .10 years ago I'd find 10 or 12 on the lawn every night , now 2 or 3 a week is more common. I'm not sure why, some look sick some very fat and well .

Rescued a green tree frog on the job I've been working on a couple of days ago.

It had fallen into a post hole I was cleaning out prior to placing concrete.

Frogs seem to be making a bit of a come back.

In all seriousness I don't like killing toads because as you said tongue in cheek , they feel too. The trouble is that they are essentially little poison baits and you just can't leave them sitting around.

I actually got my boat on the water today.
Using Duncan's set up for the jib makes things so much easier. A few technical hitches like the tiller extention twisty bit coming untwisted half way through a jibe and jib sheets way too long. But I didn't capsize or hit anything.

I use a puffin mast and sail on my Mac with a blue tarp jib. Not often, just for fun really as the leeboard position is quite different and awkward. I picked them up at a garage sale.

Talk about fussy! The Mirror or Heron aren't strictly true gunters anyway! But the Heron Class Association allows either a gunter rig or a bermudan rig. I don't know but I expect that most later Herons would have the bermudan rig. I like Herons and Mirrors a lot.

The Salmon bite on Halco hard metal lures over here or soft plastics pink and green Gulp Nuclear Chicken but the soft plastics are a bit fussy to use.

I went to look at her with you (Rob) in mind, but wasn't impressed enough with her to bother looking over her and I'm regretting my lousy memory because I can't remember specifically why.....hints of nail sickness down the port side rings a small bell ... but ....???? Greg , Jeff has sent me photos of the ribs etc , she is "interesting".
I think a surveyor would probably use up a biro or 2 .
But at the end of the day , its whether it suits what I want to do with it.
It doesn't look much of a sailing vessel at all.
It is still set up for what it was originally designed for , taking lobster.
I'd like to be able to sit behind the wheelhouse , with a trolling rod out each side.
If you have them further forward you can get the lines tangled on turns etc.
She is an interesting boat , but then any wooden boat is interesting to me.
Oh , and I found the email from the previous owner of the Juliene after she was sold.
She wasn't much of a sailboat , under 10 knots of breeze , but got going in 40 knots .
A beautiful boat , but I'd like something that is handier under sail.

I don't have any better pix and I don't remember much about aft of the wheelhouse but there doesn't seem to be much space. "Might she have been roughly glass sheathed??" I don't think so. Greg everything about her was 'rough' not a pretty boat but solid and I think that's what attracted me. I don't know enough to comment o nail sickness. I cannot imagine she'd be much of a sailer. I do remember however her bilges were bone dry. Not a lot of room below with the wet well, two big tanks and no permanent steps.

I'm hoping to get some more sailing done , once the seas subside a bit.
A young german girl working across the road from us has been coming out with me .
She had never sailed before , but is a quick learner , and keen.
I also met a bloke down on the marina today , a yachtsman , who wants to sail on HS , so I should get sailing again soon.
Hopefully Friday , then Saturday , after CG duty , at this stage.
Today I could see the swell crashing over Lawrence Rock , from 3-4 kms away.
By Friday the sea should have settled.

Depends on whether she wants to carry it around or not. If she wants it to be portable and light, then get one of the new Macs or a notebook with flash drive. They weigh a little over a kg - fantastic. Get an external DVD drive if you get a Windows machine.
