Well, that's good! And a good thing you had all our advice or you'd never have got that done!

If anyone needs to seal a hole in roofing iron or use old iron for a job I heartily recommend Flash Tac as the best hole stopper I've ever found ......and I've tried them all ! A gas torch is useful to dry the repair if necessary ( cos it's raining !) and it helps to melt the stuff on a little afterwards. I use a 50mm length off the roll.

    Cheap and nasty.

The proper repair is an iron rivet.

Long ago, Ive also used it as a (very) temporary repair on an old aluminium dinghy. Worked well for as long as i needed it to..

It's cooling up here, into the low 20s and the rain is holding off.

Managed to get all the jobs done on the boat that I had wanted to do today.
The rain held off except for a slight spit as I started mixing epoxy.
First job was the fuel tank chocks.
    20180308_122550.jpg

Next was the stern cleats which are now in a far more sensible position than before.

Doing this in two posts because I had almost finished adding the photos first time and it crashed.

So, the next job was getting the new grab rail and cabin top patch primered. I also did a bit of work on the mast collar leak but no photos of that.

    20180308_122642.jpg
The last job was at home and that was another coat of Cetol on the tiller extension.

Damn! I meant to bring the boat hook home so I could fit a bamboo handle. At present it has a solid wood handle and if if goes over the side it will spear straight into the seabed. it's genuine RAN so I'd hate to lose it.

Terrific. That could make an interesting start to the next VOR leg.
And I'm supposed to be in Auckland next week. And scheduled to do some corporate races in Melges 32s on Thursday. Hope it's eased or passed by then.

That's ridiculous! I find just 25 coats is more than enough. And 15 is fine if I stick to my monthly schedule.

Enough varnish bashing, although, on reflection .............. Had to stop putting varnish on mast, I was afraid the fittings wouldn't fit because of the increasing size

Maybe my expectations were too high. It's really a character study. Nothing about the race, nothing about the boat, nothing about any of the other sailors or their boats. A more positive (maybe even generous) impression of Crowhurst than anything else I've seen or read. A movie about destruction of a man and his family.

Good lord, what a pointless waste of acting then. The history of that episode is so eventful, rich and lesson-worthy.

I shall not bother with it then. I've read about and that was sad enough.
A very soggy weekend on the boat. Managed to get some top coat on various bits Friday arvo. On dusk I heard shouting and thought there was a barny going on up near the fish and chip shop. Moments later a young bloke comes down the road, no shirt and shaved head literally screaming F... YOU interspersed with sobbing. He stopped and leaned against the toilet block near me for a few moments and then continued on down the road. Quite scary to be honest; figured Ice or something equally nasty.

Probably. We had a similar episode here in Woop Woop. A guy started banging on a wall of our house, at about midnight. It was winter and he had no shirt. When I went out, I tried to get him to put something on but he just kept yelling from across the road. Tracy called police but by the time they arrived from Broken Hill or wherever the idiot government has them based now, the guy had gone. The next morning we saw a car off the side of the road which looked like the windscreen had been kicked out from the inside. The police were searching for this guy, along with either family or friends. I don't know anything about ice but this guy's behaviour seemed to match descriptions I've read. After many years in schools, I'm pretty good at picking heroin, alcohol and grass addiction but ice etc. are all new to me. I hope it stays that way.

Driving the council van recently, thankfully just me on board, a bloke walked out into my lane a fair way ahead of me then lined up the van, dropped a shoulder and charged headlong at me. His face was not a pretty thing. I managed to stop the van before he ran through it. He made eye contact with me - psychotic contempt I think - then he walked off the road. No shirt, built like an NRL bulldozer. One of the people at the council suggested a variant on an amphetamine drug I'd never heard if.
