You did well, that timber looks remarkably straight ! Up here, with our fast growing trees, Lucas saws saw a LOT of bendy timber !

We were out on Newcastle Harbour last weekend and watched a coal ship come in. There was a big seal perched on top of the rudder. As the ship made its turn to head up river, the seal jumped in and we watched it making its way seaward. Apparently they do it quite a lot, although I haven't seen it before. They must get up there while the ships are anchored closer in or drifting a little further out. Ferry owners etc. reckon they do it to hitch a ride into the river. Fun to see, anyway.

I didn't get any photos but if you Google seals riding on rudder Newcastle you'll find some. They're pretty brave as there's always a braking tug with ships entering the port.

My friends who own the property are going to build a massive pergola. The posts are 250x250 I think, some beams about 150 x200. Some post and rail fence sections. Not whole fences, just a few posts either side of gates. Corner posts 300 x 300 intermediates 200 by 200. Rails I think are 75 x300

And then for us, framing for a room I am about to build between our house and a little stone outbuilding at the back. A bit over 5x5 metres with a pitched roof tieing into the house roof.

    I like the seals.

Having another go at sanding the floor next week, a big orbital sander this time though...hopefully I won't break that.
Boat content, well off to the boat tomorrow and with luck on Sunday all the primer will be done and maybe the topsides given a top coat.

I've got a 7'' Makita sander polisher you are welcome to borrow if you need it Gary. It takes velcro discs.

I tried a big orbital floor sander once. Wasn't happy with it. Very slow. The rental sanders are pretty rough. Professionals use a slightly different drum sander, which is much nicer to use and produces a much better finish. Have only been able to find one of them for hire once, a long time ago. It might have even been a giant belt sander in fact, not sure.

Drum sander is better, you sand along the grain not across it. I managed to hire one here a few years ago. You need more belts than you think, and allow for some fine for the finish.

Yeah, they are OK. You just have to be careful not to dig in at the end of a run as you go from forward to backward.

I've sanded 2 floors and prefer to use the finest grit the hire place has, if I make a mistake it doesn't do as much damage so quickly !

I'm at the opera venue setting up for night two. We could sell out all 200 seats the way it's going. Chookas all round I reckon.

Yeah the price of tickets to shows like the opera is very high. We don't go to shows any more unless James is in them. I know now why the price is so high but that doesn't make it any easier to fork out that sort of dosh. Anyway you probably would have fallen asleep and snored all through the good bits after a week of woodcutting

So, boat content, the set had more boat stuff than most people have in their boat sheds, including a whole boat and lots of Arawana's stuff. We put out all 200 chairs that we hired for the show and filled around 180 of them. That's a lot of bums on seats in a flour shed on the wharf in Port Adelaide. Everything came together tonight. The orchestra, the performers, the set, the direction, the singing, the appreciative audience, and especially the bit where the male hero figure runs on in full 1928 footy gear. It rocked.

Okay you know how in life you have a dream of owning or doing this and that? Well I'm being offered one of those moments...namely this.

At well below resale price. Now ever since I discovered junk rigs the 34 ft Badger was the boat I really wanted. Bugger. I say that because even if he gave it to me I still would not be able to afford it. I would need to live aboard or at least go cruising, neither of which is likely...let alone sail it back from New Zealand.

And on a less frustrating note, Redwing's topsides return to their right colour while the cockpit almost gets totally primered...I ran out.

That's the portside cockpit seat and companionway hatch which still need cutting into two bits and the slides fitted.

I have to say the refection of the dinghy indicates a finish far beyond the reality. I'm settling for functional.

We did a good thing. Carmen in Port Adelaide has closed to great acclaim. We had a total of around 450 seats filled over 3 performances which is pretty darn spectacular. I haven't read a review yet but who cares. All the audience comments were very positive. The cast and crew are stoked. There are a couple of days work to put the show to bed, then we start planning the next two years of shows. I am super blessed to be in a family where this stuff happens.

Boat content; the leading lady - Carmen - wants to know why TF I didn't have Arawana ready to go sailing while she was here from Sydney for the show, so now I'm obliged to provide an intact luxury cruising yacht for the cast and crew to lounge around on next time. What a terrible burden!

I'm in for a drum of varnish, but you can do the sanding……………...

Congrat's on the show too, good stuff.

Got the International Cadet hull home yesterday, apart from the deck it may not be as bad as I first thought. But the paint job…………………
Blood red and a murky green……………….
