    I sent this today.

    Hello .....,

with regard to Adelante, she is in need of some serious work including
removing the concrete forward, replacing the rotten frames forward and
make sure the keel structure and planking beneath is sound, broken
frames aft, rebuild the deck house, repairing the engine.

This from a relatively short inspection. All this is obvious to the
    casual observer.

What is your real asking price?

    regards,

Good luck! Let him know that vintage Dragons almost cannot be given away in Sydney.

Just received the power bill today: Nearly 900 squids! Over treble the usual quarterly amount!

Figured out that the bore pump pressure valve ball was caked up and, as a result, the pump was running many more hours than need be to fill up the header tank. The previous problem was that the loss of prime and loss of pressure switch was actually two switches, so the bloody think always stopped. We'd only know it had stopped once the house pump started to splutter, along with our taps. A long wait ensued for the header tank to refill. A least it's fixed! And here we were being all energy conscious!

Two of those I worked on (builds) had either lead ballast pigs covered with a gal reo mesh cage or affixed to sub surface frames by straps (the latter t'was a steelie hull). There are ways and ways of course but of concrete I have nothing to add.

If the hull's good and there's reasonable hardware with it then it's looking pretty good to me. That engine might not be new but it still looks pretty good! What's the planking Peter?

I reckon you'd better duck round to Gary's and grab that lead back!

Gary, you'd better hurry up and bolt that ballast on!

There must be something in the water up there.................. apart from old boats.
I like her lines, did you find out if she comes with a rig?

She's very small... 6000 pound displacement , 2.7ton. I think just a little too small.

I could do the work, I might even enjoy it but I suspect that when I finished I would be muttering about the size and trying to find space for stores .

A rig apparently, but I haven't asked about sails. If there aren't any they would cost more than the boat .

So not interested eh Peter? She does look a pokey to me, little more than a weekender.

Very much a weekender or perhaps a week's cruise. I don't think I could carry sufficient stores for much longer. A bit bigger boat makes more sense.

The overhangs are minimal therefore the "comfort/storage index" is raised somewhat.

Rick, what happened to that big steel flush decker that was for sale in your local marina? The one with winches scattered like confetti on the deck. She was $48,000. I have thought about that boat sometimes since.

I've sailed on a Randell 23, a lovely little boat, very capable ... a slightly smaller Vertue. The one I used to sail on was an exact sister to this, the same year of build too. The canoe stern version above looks very similar .

I don't know much about Randall's but I am a huge fan of Laurent Giles (having sailed and lived on a Giles design for a year or so through some pretty interesting seas) and with that price drop I reckon I'd be spending a bit more time sitting on that and thinking about how it'd work for me before dismissing her........remember the goldfish principle.

I'd also want to have a very good poke around underneath her with and awl and explore with it into the transom, stem, mast step and keel timbers and the garboard area, particularly below the concrete might be. Though replacing one or two planks wouldn't be too much of a drama, replacing deadwood or keel timbers would probably place the work out of a reasonable restoration time and price bracket as far as getting money back later on.

I still think $3.5k would be more realistic and could be a good step into the water, you could always move up again from her to something bigger after you've used this as a bit of a classroom and just to get some sailing in while you're still possibly needing to be close to home. I'd perhaps base a price on the total cost of purchase and transfer to your shed being no more than $4k, so if transport was $1k, I'd try to pay no more than $3k.

You have the timber and the lead and if the rig and sails are OK, the engine repairable and if you were careful with the $$ that you put into it, it'd be all about your labour and you could end up with a very sailable and stunningly presentable boat that should sell well when (if) you do then want to trade up to something bigger.

I know we'd very rarely make money out of wooden boats but as long as you weren't too greedy about what you wanted to get back she'd be just the sort of thing that I'd buy to do up and sell for a small profit and to give someone else the pleasure of getting into a gorgeous and well restored, well founded boat for an affordable price.

Not trying to talk you into something that may not suit you Peter, just offering an opinion.

I'm really not quite so keen on the Randall, canoe sterns are not my cup of tea looks wise.

Learnt to sail on Sabots and a Heron on Albert Park Lake, that looks like a good one. I was offered one free a year ago but I passed the offer to a community sail training group.
