We are experiencing the tail end of a slightly used tropical cyclone here (Christchurch), pretty solid rain for the last couple of days, but not too much wind.
The North Island has copped the worst of it - lots of flooding and evacuations, similar to what you had over in the West Island.

These days, pre computer they were just sent interstate..... they were after the Brisbane '74 floods. I was working for a yard at the time.

The procedure I used to try and salvage an expensive electronic bike light with LCD and chip was washing with distilled water thoroughly, and then washing with isopropyl alcohol, and then drying for a week. I only had marginal success. I can't imagine the iPads will survive unfortunately.

I'm limited to what I can do as I can't open them up which I had planned to do. Two are sealed in bags with white rice and one is on charge and presently at 25%. If they work I win, if not I lost nothing but a bit of time.

Our kids had those Tamagotchi "virtual pet" things years ago. The boy's one went through the washing machine three times, before it finally gave up. A few days in a warm place, with the battery removed, and it was away. It was the most annoyingly resilient piece of electronics I've ever seen.

I've had two phones go swimming. I tried to ressurect them both times. The second time I seemed to be making headway but powered it up too soon and cooked the gizzards. Patience, dessicant, isopropyl alcohol, and there's a high likelihood of failure anyway, but if you win, you win, and the base level is total loss anyway.

I put my current phone in a waterproof case. I'm not going to test it. I still try to keep it dry. The case makes me feel better about having the phone with me when I'm on board a boat, but I may be kidding myself.

This old Mac got rained on when open. Just a few drops but it now has a mind of it's own. Cursor is a free agent at times and windows open and close at random, and as for typing something legible, com se com sa. Depends on it's mood. But it's handy having two at times.
The new one has a rather dictatorial predictive text, and there are some words it just does not like……….!

But you can join a club and start target shooting and then buy one ................ eventually. Regardless of owning the firearm though, the target shooting clubs are generally a good community and I’ve been enjoying the competing and fellowship of it quite a bit.


Re spraying and running - I used an MDF VJ lining for my ceiling in my cellar and, after finally finishing my gyprock walls, spray primed the walls ready for a rolled top coat and then sprayed the topcoat on the ceiling as a better option to fill the VJ grooves.

I did the first coat last night and had a couple of minor runs up the stairway ceiling where access was cramped (with the door closed and taped up to keep the mist and dust out of the house).

I sanded those back this morning and I thought I’d done a better job of the second coat until I packed up for lunch and went back to the stair case ceiling, which I’d done first to get the awkward bit out of the way, and bugger me but I’d made a complete bloody mess of it, more runs than Don Bradman.

Anyway I let it go off a bit over lunch to get it to sag to the worst it could do and then scraped it back with a gyprocking blade. All’s not lost, but I think I’ll finish that bit now with a roller. I’d hoped to be done with all of the painting by today so that I could get the floor down (sandstone in a French flagstone pattern) and start fitting it out.

Should be done by the end of next week and then, if no work looking likely, on to the H28

Just back from a quick drive to Melbourne and back to pick up a new excavator. Well nearly new anyway, it's got 110 hours on it. My first excavator was getting a bit unreliable and wobbly in some areas, so I sold it. Found a good deal on a replacement in Devonport. Shiny new toy. Happy days.

It's a Takeuchi TB 216. 1.6 ton expandable track machine. The old one was called a TB 016. Basically the same but some small design changes, and of course less hours. The guy I bought it from was the first owner, bought it new and effectively paid $10,000 for 100 hours use. Depreciation as soon as it gets off the showroom floor. I think I got a good deal.

Sorry for the off colour posts. I'm considering worst case scenarios and wondering about how to disappear without leaving others behind to face consequences. Or how to stay and not be such a soft target. The recent killing in ACT spooked me a bit I'm afraid.
