It looks pretty good Andrew and I love blackwood. I might buy it myself if I were closer, but I don't really need it. I have sufficient red cedar for a fit out and it's lighter than blackwood too.

I bought some BW for another job a while ago Peter and I'm worried I havnt got enough.
I was surprised how light and soft ish it is. Not your usual Aus h'wood. You're right though cedar is prob lighter.
prob won't last a week on eBay but I'll have another look when I go home again.

Not wooden, but out of interest I inspected this flybridge cruiser (glass) last week for a couple who are interested in buying it as a live-aboard/cruiser. The owner supposedly was after about $120k when he was advertising it and knocked back offers of around $80k. But now he’s desperate to sell it because he’s gone west and the marina is costing him so he’s put it to auction.

The boat is in quite sound condition, good engines, electrics, equipment and genny and really (as far as I could see) only cosmetic work to be done inside and out to cabin veneer panelling, teak deck, trim etc and in desperate need of a clean and antifouling (couldn’t otherwise check the hull, prop and rudder without it out of the water). Some possible work needed where the top of the fuel tanks was starting to look messy, but otherwise a nice solid and honest boat.

The couple were quite sure that they’d pick it up for about $40k and I told them that I doubted that very much and that it’d be at the very least $60k depending on interest and probably more likely end up around the $80k mark.....anyway they disagreed so I’ve been keeping an eye on the bidding:

With bidding already over $60K their $40K wish is far gone.
Overall it looks OK, usual issue is a leaking deck seam allowing rot in what is usually a ply deck underneath.
it will probably go in the 80-90K range.

Yes, so I inspected it while it was raining and after it had been bucketing down rain all night and all morning - I was quite surprised that I could only find one tiny leak just behind the anchor locker hatch and in a galley hatch that hadn’t been closed properly

Rain promised, but its went north of us. 5mm in 4 weeks, but it's a late summer.

Gave the old sailfish a workout on sunday. Good breeze from a convenient direction. She's quick if pushed, quicker than some of the Impulses, and fun when hiking out, but in lighter air sitting on that convex deck, painful to me at least.
In spite of my restoration in 2013 a few problems arose.....

Damage report: Pulled rudder fittings from transom: rot.
Split deck with knee: slipped when gybing.
Mast glue joint failed completely except except where I’d fixed it previously and where there were fittings: Repairable.
Comfort report: Painful to sail over an extended time unless you could hike outboard. I tried kneeling, sitting flat, crouching, lying down.

Conclusion: Quick, fun, awkward.

I doubt I could sail a full race on her.
Could do with a lump of Huon for the new transom......

Then thats encouraging.
At 0930 the bids are still at $60.5K.
I guess there is always the dreaded osmosis to consider - at 35 years old and with a load of below waterline undergrowth it could be an issue.
But the effect of osmosis on selling price is often overstated to hammer down the price. Youll never know until its lifted and scraped.

Ha ha.... Yes, it's a lot of work to finish her off. It's a lot of boat though, but I think she'll prove difficult to move. I hesitate to suggest it, but there's lots of portholes and some other bits that would bring in some bucks. Brand new props last time I slipped her too.

I have toyed with shipping her up to Java and have the work finished there.... but, there's a bit too much on my plate at present.

No osmosis hen surveyed 3 years ago so anything since then should be reasonably minor and it’s actually reasonably easily repaired anyway - the guy that I was looking at it for is a fibreglasser so that was the least of his concerns.

Good luck with it Ian - the shipping to Java (or Thailand or Vietnam) idea isn’t such a bad one. I understand that you have a lot on your plate, but it may be a good option to advertise it as both as is or as a refitted/turn-key/completed luxury gentleman yacht with a berth in Phuket (or somewhere like that), with the refit only to be done on commitment of the buyer........(and if you need a project manager......).

Well this is a bit unusual. I just got a message from the seller of the Rugged, and the ad is visible on Gumtree again! I must be going mad. Quite possible. I searched for the ad earlier to make sure, I even did a listing of all sailing boats on Gumtree in SA and went through them all. Whatever. It's still for sale and we're looking for common free time to inspect.

The auction closed at $65,000. It's sounding more and more like someone got a pretty good deal - or a cheap home.
Compared to like boats on sale its a bargain - but then you can never really know by the asking price.

I've been making a model of the swinging cradle for Masina's new stove. I've just given it to the local marine engineering guy to make up in SS. It'll allow the kettle to be stored under the stove and cups to be placed there when making tea underway. That's the theory. I will report any tea in the bilge.
