On the subject of lakatois ....... Motus, the people of SE PNG, traditionally race double-ended outrigger sailing canoes. These days, these things are pretty high tech, with modern sailcloth sails and modern running gear. They're very fast and they sail them in really strong wind. They don't tack or gybe them. The mast is in the centre of the hull so they just swing the sail around and switch the rudder to the other end. The locals gamble on them, and also gamble on their model versions. Ex-pats in Moresby often call these boats lakatois but when I did that, my Motu colleagues roused on me and explained what lakatois actually are. Unfortunately, I didn't find out what the Motu word for sailing canoe is!

I've got some pictures of these boats but they're not digital. I'll see if I can find them though, scan them and post some here.

That rash of pirogues - Bruce, you just stay out of this, - they're using blue tarp sails and the hulls are longer and rougher than the boats used in Moresby. The ones that race during the season in POM are really classy boats. And amazingly fast!

Meanwhile - Bruce you can tune back in now - I've checked out kites for aerial sailing photography. I can get a standard delta kite that basically goes up into the air and you get aerial shots like the ones we've seen. But I'd like a manouverable kite so that I can vary the angles etc. Regular stunt kites can't carry anything without collapsing. But an inflatable kiteboarding trainer kite can, and they're very manouverable. So I'm seeing if I can find one of those at a reasonable price ......

Duncan sailed and I messed with the engine and did more varnish work...nearly caught up with it now.

I've been looking at the trainer kites last night and this morning, they seem to be quite reasonably priced (from $50.00 Oz) and, talking to a guy about them this morning, even the smaller ones sound like they might be capable of pulling Scallywag along a bit:

Hmm, what do you think of something along those lines for self-rescue in the event of losing the rig of a micro-mini cruiser, e.g. Scamp, Mirror?

A trainer kite would certainly pull Scallywag along or serve as a jury rig for rescue. You'd need a harness for strong wind - they're cheap. To carry a camera though, I'll need an inflatable kite - they hold their shape. And they're dearer.

Fantastic isn't it? All the fuss Europeans make about evolution of hulls and rigs etc. while Polynesians and Melanesians have been flying across the sea in boats made from hollow logs with sails made from woven bamboo for a millennium, at least!

Early on sailing the Mac I got caught in a wind change, a big one, and came home with a big wind behind me right across the bay and up onto the wet grass beyond the beach as the tide was right in pushed by the wind. Death roll threatened all the way, no chance to drop the sail and only a 6ft shafted paddle saved me as a lever-come-rudder under the canoe.

I was going to but can't stomach Kerry O'brien so I've picked up a book to read instead.

New front struts for the mazda aren't cheap, $200 each! By the time I get the Mazda rego'd and buy the outboard there's not going to be much more than coffee money left from the sale of the ute.

Well I got the old treadly out of the shed. My preferred form of punishment is the rowing machine, but thats in PNG and I dont have one here. I have a "usual" ride from my house to Ashton and back. A couple of years ago that was a 28 minute ride. Tuesday it was 45. So yesterday i pedalled like hell, damn near killed myself, didn't even have a rest going down hill. Checked the clock between gasps and wheezes when i got home. Exactly 45 minutes! Couldn't believe it. I expected to knock at least a few minutes off. Anyway, better keep working on it I guess.

You will. Sounds like a good move to me. I find when I haven't exercised for a long while, I do much worse on the second day and then improve steadily after that.

Phil, don't forget that the recovery is the most important part of exercise. Be smart about it - any dumbkin can break muscle tissue, but a smart one will feed the broken muscle and rest to let it heal up stronger.

Nothing broken-thats one of the good things aboutcycling. But i couldn't believe there was no improvement in my time-it felt a lot faster, and harder. Anyway my son has a superlightweight carbon fibre bike he's lending me-that should take a few minutes off the old mountain bike.

This is a message for those in Adelaide. A group of us are meeting on Thursday evening for dinner and you're welcome to come. 5:00pm outside the Sailmaster tavern, North Haven, on the marina side. Ted Hoppe from the US is visiting and we'll be having dinner with him after we've had a quick look at the boats at the NH marina.

Please message me if you'll be coming, unless I already have your confirmation.
