A thread that's focussed primarily on boats and wooden boat related matters. Its purpose would be to bring Antipodeans together to share information, skills, resource sources etc. In no way is this thread intended to diminish any other thread but I do know that there are some who would like to connect on boat matters but don't want to venture into the dark territory of The Bilge. Please join if you're interested. There are no enforceable rules, of course, but the rule is: no politics!

I'm Rick, I live in Port Stephens. I have a Folkboat I restored and I've commenced restoration of a Twister. I have a thread in B & R entitled Restoration of a Twister.

I'm Jeff and I live on Western Port Bay in Victoria. Nothing spectacular in the way of boats, An Oughtred designed Macgregor decked sailing canoe, an old sailfish and a Mirror in need of a new bottom. I just sold two others because they were not practical for the depth of water where I live and of course, storage.

Oh yes, and a plastic sea kayak

That double-ender for sale is nice though, I think! If the restoration work is good then at least most of the really laborious stuff is done.

I'm passionate about building things particularly in wood, have many sets of boat plans, but currently no boat.

I have tried the 12 step programme but sawdust and petrol are in my blood.

What are you most likely to build Rufus?

Hi all ! Peter (obviously ) .North Coast of NSW .A begun but not to be completed 31 foot cutter in my shed .... but a very nice pile of 10mm marine ply as well and the plans for a Selway Fisher JIM 18 foot canoe yawl.

Has anyone been following the John Welsford Nautilus thread in Design? I'm fascinated by it .I've never sailed a sailing canoe but can see on in my future ! A really lovely little craft and light enough to toss on the roof racks .How much is 4mm marine ply per sheet ?

I'm an unreformed wooden boataholic, I started building a Hartley Spindrift 24 in 1986 and was totally addicted for 5 years but I managed to beat the addiction for 15 whole years. Sadly on an innocent visit to see friends in Brisbane 5 years ago I was severely tested folks, yes, I went sailing. Now I spend lonely days working away on the boat once more...but that's not all. I have sunk sooo low in my depravity that my nights are consumed trawling Internet forums looking for wooden boat porn, no fetish is off limits, canoe sterns, strip planking, full bilges and...shudder, Junk rigs.
It's okay though, really...I I can kick the habit anytime you know.........

You do know Rufus that these two statements are genetically linked? It's the normal state for a man in your profession and should not impact on your boat building programme.

I too have been following the Nautilus thread and though I already have a sailing canoe I admit to being tempted.

4mm ply isn't expensive. Last time I went looking for marine ply, I was talked into getting hoop pine ply from Mr Plywood. A local boatbuilder in Lemon Tree Passage recommended it. It's a lot cheaper than the usual meranti etc. ply and it's supposed to be really good. It looks alright to me but, how can you really tell? Anyway, it's what I've bought for my Nutshell Pram (I have the plans and the wood too Rufus!) so time will tell if I ever get the time to build the pram. My plan is to build a kayak before I build the pram .....

Very nice effect Rufus and I wish I had thought of that. Redwing is built with 10mm marine grade Hoop Pine ply on Flooded Gum framing.

With our renovation, I'm keen to get rid of a lot of the Gyprock we already have and I don't want to use too much more. So, I'm looking for ideas on internal wall cladding. I've considered stained ply - there's a cafe here with walls done in red, green, blue etc. stain and it looks really good - for a cafe! Your limewashed ply looks great!

At this stage, it looks like the floors will be bluegum, the kitchen will have bluegum benchtops and silky oak doors and drawers and I hope to do all the trim with kauri. There's a thumping great steel I beam running right down the middle of the ceiling that'll be finished with rust converter (rustic/y look? So any ideas on wall cladding to go with that will be very welcome!

I've got a plywood tender I built many years ago with my son , a balsa sandwich tender , that belongs to Huon Seal (HS) , and the Grey Seal Huon Seal (HS), a high peaked gaff cutter.
And yes , for me , a boat is built in timber .
I'm looking to replace HS with a bigger motorsailer , as good as HS is , she isn't suitable for what I do.
She has been on the market for a while , without success , so I may just give her to my eldest son.
Currently , Danish boats , timber double ender ex fishing boats that have been set up as gaff cutters are at the top of the list , particularly one , a nice plump 30 footer.
She has been set up well to sail , and has a nice flat deck , and plenty of places to fish from , or set up trolling lines.
The prices are very right , but its all the other hassles that are the hurdle.
We shall see.

Nice finish Rufus. I actually did a similar wall for a mate in Darwin a few years ago to match a council chambers wall that he liked, still with black recesses but with mahogany stained ply and symmetrical panels about 900mm x 900mm each from memory. Looked great and I set up a couple of panels on hinges and magnetic closers to act as small secret cupboards for a bit of fun.

Rick, The ceilings in most rooms had an ugly beam running across.

I packed it and clad it with offcuts of ply with all the lines lining up with the lines on the ceilings.

Made a feature of it and helped it disappear at the same time.

We actually chose our beam - all the neighbours and I carried it into the house only a week ago. It was like a scene from Mao's Great Leap Forward! It's 10.4m long and about 200mm high. We want it to look rusty, as a feature! We might regret that sometime but we're planning around it at the moment. We want a sort of beaten and weathered timber and steel look around the house .....

Looking forward to getting to know you all better. I have a shack up in the Sandy Straits, pretty much plywood-lined from top to bottom. Just did a little reno of a room in the house here in Brisbane and used some plasterboard..what a shocking consumer of time that is, for nothing more than a paper wall when you're done. Never again.

Hey fellas, I'm Andy from Sydney. I've just finished a CLC Jimmy Skiff built for rowing - the sail will happen on my next boat. The oars should be finished by Christmas, they're half done now. If it all gets done by Christmas, I'll be able to say that I built my first boat in a year

Ah, of course...an EBS..how could I have not got that! Perhaps I need some practice..better come down then..Jan sounds great. I taught at UQ from '85 to '02 so take 15 years off both our faces and hips and we'd probably recognise each other better. It's your name that's very familiar to me. Probably crit sesh, sumer exhib, or maybe with ms Woolley, she's an old friend too.
