I think it was priced at a couple of hundred thousand originally, it's been up for a while. It looks a bit like the equivalent of buying a 'handyman special' wooden boat. If you wanted to start a club of some kind it could be great

I don't know if anyone is feeling social around Monday or Tuesday up the east coast? We are on our way over to visit with a much loved aunt in Ballina who is quite unwell. We might ten catch up with some friends living on a yacht in BumsBay or Southport Marina. Other than that we have some time on our hands. Probably hit the road back home on Wednesday. We are in Dubbo tonight. Loving the 70s pop top camper thing.

Looks a bit "I want to be alone" to me, a paling fence on a jetty? And the other jetty………. a bit home made do you think?
    Probably not a good neighbour.

We will have to play things by ear a bit. The aunt has very little energy so it's a game of wait and see if she's up to a visit.

Watch out for those big bastwerds. They play chicken with boats. Last year I had three of the cheeky monstrous leviathans cross my path deliberately to make me swerve and stall. I could hear them laughing at me as they charged flat out across my track, close enough to go eye-to-eye and grin to grin with me.

I'm going to put off the eye op till next year and pull the boat out in October. I'm sick of waiting and the rot is not going to fix itself.

Anyone wants to join Phil and myself for a two hour whale watching trip across the Tweed Bar aboard WB departing Boyd’s Bay jetty around lunch time this coming Tuesday?
Possible EBS at the Ivory pub next to the bridge unconfirmed at this time?

Yes, sounds good but I'll have to check with Management to see if I'm otherwise booked.

With the south westerlies we’ve been getting the bar has been perfect. I was out Saturday on PD30 and it would have been a perfect sail to Southport.

Let me know what time you think you'll be at the Ivory and I'll see if I can swing past for a beer afterwards. I can't afford the time for whale watching at this stage.

This arrangement might have the same surface area but the boat will balance differently then if it had a board. I doubt it help the boat point up much into the wind.

I'd say a leeboard Tom, but the shape doesn't lend itself to one unless you build one with a bend so that it's still close enough to vertical when the boat has heeled. OTOH you might explore foil profiles, like wing formations.

Not happy I can't come on the whale watching/sailing/lunch EBS though…………….

Or let the leeboard cant inwards. It will give you lift on your leeward side. Or just attach some sort of pacer on the onboard side of the leeboard so it adopts whatever angle you like. Have a lip near the top which hooks on the gunnel. And maybe a rope going to the centreline of the boat. Just flip the board across when you tack. I'd sooner something like that than a long fixed keel.

If I had more notice I may have been able to swing it. As it is I’ve had to put off another client in Brisbane this week already. I’ll be working all weekend, so an hour at a boozer is about all I can spare. Make hay while the sun shines sort of thing...

But area is almost irrelevant compared to depth, isn't it? That keel is what, 10ft long and maximum 1ft deep? It's the rough equivalent of a wing 10 times longer than it is in span, and they don't even get off the ground. Since lift is caused by turning water and this case you're only turning a 12" deep bit of water at the maximum, there's not going to be much leeway resistance.

Maybe you could get some good information by going to the guys who sail Scotland's Plockton Local Boats? They appear to be the last racing dinghy that doesn't allow centreboards, so they must have a lot of knowledge about keels on traditional dinghy types.

On this day last year, Arawana had just left Sydney for Jervis Bay, with Bruce in it, trying to rig up some sort of sheet-to-tiller steering system .....
