Hi. Thelma and I are now at the little marina in Triabunna after a 3 day and 4 hour crossing to Tasmania. The only hand steering we needed was from out from behind the Navy wharf in Eden and into the narrow channel to Triabunna. Will welcome any visitors to our sturdy Vertue yacht at the AWBF in February

Awesome! Well done to you both and to the Vertue.

Do you have windvane self steering?

They were standard equipment on cruising yachts prior to electronic logs and then GPS. I doubt there'd be many in use at all now. I have one somewhere.

Hello Rick, We still have our trailing log on board, didn't use it on this trip but have used it on trips to Queensland. Most of Queensland's marine officials think we are trailing a fishing line and want to impose a fine. Bruce

L1000964.jpgDSC01630.jpgL1000042.jpgL1000124.jpgThese are photos of our trim tab on the main rudder and the bracket for supporting the wind vane. What is missing in one of the photosis the connection rod from the wind vane to the trim tab tiller arm. We also use a Simrad auto pilot to the maim tiller. Bruce

I'm sure there are others too, who've done so much cruising as you, Bruce, that have kept them and use them from time to time. But do you use it for navigation still or just to check your speed through the water out of interest?

Do you have an electronic log/speedometer? We don't so we can only measure SOG with GPS. I debated leaving the plates on for the Walker log but, as they were in the way, I removed them. I can put them back on but I doubt I will.

Hi Rick, we have used the trailing log in Queensland and on trips to Pittwater just as a exercise. We do still have our original B & G wind speed and direction, and duel speed sensor instruments which all are working OK. The B and G instruments are about 30 years old and were installed just before launching.

Great to meet yourself and Thelma today Bruce. We found a fantastic campsite overlooking the Denison Canal.
Must be high tide. Just saw 3 boats go through.

Just goes to show how reliable some of those older electronics where .

Navigating celestial in the 70-80s we just used to log and estimate our mileage .

Apparently those walker used to be prone to be lost to fish strikes ,therefore the additional spare in the box.

I sold it to him. I bought it from a bloke who, to put it politely, was as I found out somewhat dodgy.

I took on board the comments about some popular dinghies being tubs, and my own lived experiences with the several small craft that I've sailed, and yesterday I committed myself to buying something slightly different.

It is a wooden boat. It has sail and oar propulsion. It is light and small enough for me to manhandle on trailer, beach and water. It even has the word Ocean in its design name.

I hope it meets with approval.

Interesting to see the pattern of some of us in downsizing our sailing dreams

I find this a delicate balancing act versus physical comfort, cruising range ,financial and maintenance requirements of a larger vessel as opposed to a Dinghy or small TS..

Personally my preference is a light Dinghy that is easily driven under sail and oars with the 13’5” Tammie Norrie close to perfect.

    What's the "B" stand for?.......bath tub?

    Definitely a classic wooden boat!

I have one of them onboard - needs a seal under the lid. I tried a couple of off the shelf O rings, but can't quite get the fit right.

I don't have a nice wooden box though.

Glad you got there safely Bruce.
Sorry I couldn't catch up in JB that time. I did spend a few days under the lee of the southern end hiding from the big southerly blow/swell that bashed my mooring a week or so later. Quite few days, me, books, odd jobs, wind and rain - nice.

I'm not saying it IS happening. I'm not saying it AINT happening. But, it's happening.

So I'm starting to call it a TS 8 just to poke the TS crowd a little bit.

Anyway, watch this space. If I get as far a Glenelg and back, around 20 nm return, I'll do a sleep aboard and call myself famous.

Mostly drizzle. We have the roof on Don's shed now so it doesn't matter if it rains.
Kez's hip replacement has been fast tracked to late February, which she is, sort of pleased about.

Clocked up 11.5 nautical miles in the Port Adelaide River first time out.

Defs some bits I want to adjust to suit my preferences. Rigging details mostly. The sail is a polytarp job that has given years of service and is due for replacement.
