Good work Rob. He'll really need his comms if he sets off on his planned trip.

It looked like a very good prospect in the photos online. With his background and knowledge of boats I'm sure it's a corker of a boat. Wish him well from me when you catch up again.

Hillyards are legendary boats! Go anywhere, proper passage making vessels, and fast too! If you've got the spare wedge Peter, you should snap it up.

Hail here at Largs just now. Strong wind warnings for the metropolitan waters today. I may just be a big blouse and keep Crackers in the yard.

We cut about a million tons of firewood yesterday-big tree fell down in national park next door to a friend's property. Big do nothing day today. Fire lit, back to bed.

It's about 29c here on the land and in the water, and currently the rain is coming down in bucket loads. The swell's dropped a bit, thankfully, so I had great fun in the waves yesterday and probably will again today after the storm passes. Went for a dive yesterday morning too - turtles and loads of fish I hadn't seen before. Yesterday's storm hit us as we were going out though so for about 20 minutes, the boat, which is about 40' and has a full roof, like a ferry, was like a tunnel of spray and rain, so we just had to wear it. The helmsman just kept the motor going and the rudder hard on to keep the boat into the wind. Good thing it's so warm here! We leave tonight - it's about a 30 minute fast boat ride into Male for the flight to Singapore and then we'll get into Sydney tomorrow night. Rick

I wasn't going to ask Rob, he's away and I thought that it might not be a good idea.

Looking at the Ariel shots from an hour ago it's still developing. I think, apart from spots, their place should be safe but it is going in their direction. Gusty change about 9 they say.

There is a spit of bush very close to their house but on the other side of a road, the road should provide sufficient firebreak but I hope the wind doesn't pick up.

Okay, well, Ms T and Woody are in Newcastle so I'm not worried about them. Apparently the fire's at Lemon Tree which is to the east of us and the wind's NW, so I doubt the house is at much risk. Of course it's possible for a fire to get through from Tanilba to us but it would have to cross a couple of streets of houses, so it's unlikely. We have bush across the road but it's directly east and it's unlikely that a fire would come in from the east. So I'm not expecting to come home to a pile of ashes but I guess it's possible - worse things could happen! I can't call anyone from here. Thanks for your concern everyone! Rick

Yep, that tells me that it's Lemon Tree Rd rather than Lemon Tree. The Browns Rd area is in about the middle of LTP Rd and an area where there are a lot of fires. A house was lost there just a year or two ago. It's about 6 km west of us and very unlikely to cause a problem for our property. Rick

Where I live is really quite protected from the wind but I reckon the wind today could blow the spots off a dog.

Rick. Picked your Mirror up tonight with all the gear including spinnaker pole, a car top rack and a beach trolley. Rig is a bit more complex than the base model I think. A bit bumped and bruised but nothing that can't be repaired.
I'll find a spot where it'll be safe from falling stuff and store it upside down on the trolley.

Get well soon Rob! Pneumonia (the actual 'flu') is a nasty one to get. Everyone says "I've got a flu!" But unless they've had The Flu proper, they ain't had it. A whole other level of feeling crappy and in pain!

BTW, did anyone watch that movie?

I've just found my Scamp hatch design details, courtesy of Ian Howick on this forum! I really haven't been happy with any of the solutions I've seen so far until now. Back in the shed again to make one up in a seat top and see how it goes, then onwards and upwards again. See his photos in the 'capsize a sooty tern' thread.

I think it's very relevant to all the small sail/oar sail/outboard sail/drift boats. I don't get the attitude that you don't have to plan for or expect a capsize in a small boat. I can't imagine anyone sailing off Largs for long without doing a full ditch, and to think that some of the guys are doing significant passages over cold water and don't ever expect to go in...

I guess that's one of the things that drew me to the Scamp. The cockpit is basically a big bathtub, with the sloping sole built above the waterline, and twin plug holes at the transom. It comes back up from a ditching pretty easily and with not much water so long as the sea state is not too bad. It does have a trade off in that it's pretty hard to climb back in over those high sides and transom though and will need boarding stirrups on each side and possibly transom or rudder steps.

I'm not a medical person, but Influenza and Pnuemonia seem a bit different to me. Just sayin.
IIRC The 1917 flu epidemic killed more people here than our soldiers in Europe by the Axis.
