A country pump supplier, they sell the stuff to rebuild old pump glands.... especially bulldozer/ piston pumps.

Soggy day and a perfect day to be out in the shed. Got a number of small jobs done for the boat and docked up another pile of fallen branch timber.

Did you get that cedar log to the mill Gary ? If not I should be able to lift on a 3m length onto my ute with ute crane.

Not yet, it belongs to the community and we have yet to have a meeting. I shall keep you in mind Peter. I believe there is a bloke not far from here with a bandsaw mill but I have yet to talk to him.

Hot and sticky here. Unpleasant. Various boat jobs including the beach trolley and trailer, 2nd coat on the repaired transom. Made a couple more new parts for the jinker whilst I was about it.
Hada swim, water is too warm.
    Rain would be nice.

Ex cyclone Gita flooded giant areas of the South Island and lower North Island earlier this week, wiped out roads and left several areas cut off. We got about 30 knots up here.

    Yep that’s him.
I’m a bit grumbly about the rain because I was all fired up to get some painting done. Now I will have to find things to do inside the boat, which given the state of it shouldn’t be hard.

I saw some drone (?) footage of the land slips, quite extensive.

I checked with Graeme, Masina's former owner, in Nelson. All okay for them right there. Looks like the area around Kaikoura copped a hammering!

Yes Kirsty's folks in Nelson are good too, but a week or two earlier Nelson really suffered with king tides and a blow that wrecked some local establishments around the port.
Gita , this last one, wiped out great sections of road on the Takaka hill to Golden bay , so those people are all cut off.

How often have tropical cyclones descended on South Island?

I don't know how many , but they're usually pretty nasty when they do. Think Wahine disaster.
As I often repeat , its usually the cyclones that trick us ( especially back in the day without sat and internet information), the ones that go East like they should and then , lo , double back and go west like they shouldn't.
Gita did that, so it was worth keeping an eye on. Bola did that in the 80's.

We get severe lows forming in the Tasman but it's unknown for a TC to drift south of Queensland. I didn't know the Wahine disaster occurred in a cyclone.

I've just come back from several days away on the West Coast & Nelson areas. We were booked to fly out on Monday evening, which occured without hassle. I'm glad I hadnt decided on a longer stay, as it all broke loose on Tuesday.
There is nothing quite as permanent as a good temporary repair.

Cyclone Giselle. standard disclaimer: it technically is no longer a cyclone after leaving the tropics .
that nasty barsteward doubled up with another deep low pressure system coming up from south for extra effect.

Hmmm. One called nancy tracked down below Brisbane but that does seem unusual . Otherwise , we seem to have had a few hits over the years.

    Um....

January 1950 - This tropical cyclone tracked from Gulf to Sydney. 3 horseman were drowned on the 18th when Washpool Creek (80 km from Grafton) rose rapidly. Another 4 lives lost in NSW from cyclone including girl swept by storm surge and waves off Esplanade at Cronulla, a boy electrocuted by fallen power lines at Gordon in Sydney, a man drowned near Goulburn and another man drowned in the Macleay River at Kempsey. Seven yachts completely wrecked in Sydney Harbour. Record pressure reading of 988 hPa in Sydney. 10 lives lost in total.

Off to the auctions in a bit to pick up what appears to be a score. 2005 (Jan compliance - built Nov '04) VW Golf Comfortline 2.0 TSI auto. 82,000 km. $3,609 - with 11 months rego. They tried to stiff us on the rego, but consumer laws being what they are, they've backed down. We wouldn't have bought it for that price without rego. Not sure whether to flip it or keep it for the apprentice daughter in law, now that I've sold "her" X5. I've got to go down to the land of political dreams next week. Might see how it goes.

A couple of interesting cyclone history links.

    http://www.bom.gov.au/cyclone/history/nsw.shtml

I remember one of the cyclones mentioned in them, particularly this link which describes the Gold Coast erosion in '67. Cyclone Glenda came down past Coffs Harbour, where I was living. I remember our bedroom being flooded from all the water being blown through the tiny gaps in the louvre windows. We had towels everywhere, mopping it up and the wind was screaming.
