I love that kind of stuff.

I once saw a video online of Sven Yrvind (I'm pretty sure) towing one of his self-built sailboats on launch day through town behind his geared-down bicycle. Slow but sure. This was some years ago and I haven't been able to find it again recently. It was fantastic.

Needs must out. I see in my minds eye an attempt to lower it backwards with an inadequately long rope, an accelerating water approach steered by the drag of body on ramp, a dramatic splash, a jubilant float off, an embarrassment of trailer recovery and ultimately a fabulous fishing trip. Having the bravado of that success I have no doubt a helping hand from a like minded fisher would have had him home for refreshments and a piscatorial feast.

So in your mind's eye there are several mobility scooters in a line retrieving the boat and trailer?

By the way, the Pacific Highway at Belmont is one of Newcastle's busier roads.

I do wish I'd been there.

I think I had better buy a copy of Cruising Helmsman, apparently my article took up eight pages.

Thanks guys. I was going to go for a walk and get a copy but the day just filled up. In the next week I hope to have the mast, cabin top and toerails all done.

In the latest Junk Rig Asociation mag there is an article on a few members in the UK setting up instruments for measuring actual performance. The mounting brackets have been designed to be able to fit almost any sailboat.

Yes, what they do want to do is compare similar boats with different rigs. Settle the question whether JRs are efficient or not.

It is so nice to have a sleep in.

I don't think I'd ever get a junk rig because I thought it would be faster or point better than Bermudian or Gaff. If I did it would be because I thought it would be easier to manage, or easier to build myself, or more ancient traditional, or because I like mystical Asian things or for the Woo factor. But I wouldn't by trying to measure my success on the racecourse or with performance instruments.

Agreed entirely but I don't think that is what they are about. JRs in general are not looked upon as being as efficient as BRs. I hear it all the time..they won't go to windward or if they do they won't point as high etc. I think what they are doing it trying to quantify the actual performance of verious JRs...flat panel, cambered panel, split rig and wingsail. There are heaps of other factors as well such as the experience of the sailor, sea conditions, hull shape etc. I've had moments where I've surprised other yachts and I've watched them sail away from me as well.
I love the fact the rig costs a fraction off the amount to set up a BM rig and the ease of managing the rig...and I just love the shape of the sail.

Just as well I came home for a couple of days. The six year old battery in the car suddenly decided it had had enough...$125 later, all fixed.
