As do I but you were not in mind when I made it. The reference was to those who seem to pop out strings of dinghies, kayaks etc. And it's not a criticism either - like French knitting, the value seems to be in the doing, and I think that makes both activities very worthy. There is a resemblance.

MIL was a demonstration and research knitter, we still have a trunkful of unworn jumpers etc.
I agree Rick about the value, and the fun being in the doing and the problem solving that comes with it.

I live with a knitterholic. We have a storage unit, half of which is wool, the other half filled with her shoes.

    As for the house...

You can do it yourself Jeff! Have a look at Gary's link in #3016. There's a large French knitting whoosiwotzit that will produce large woolly tubes that I reckon would be perfect!

I'm laid low with my first ever giant toothache..off to see the dentist on Monday morning but for now it'll be slow progress over the weekend. Will probably just set up a mast building/sawing platform, and watch the DVD on pearling that Peter kindly lent me.

    Man, I need a whisky!!!!!

Ouch Johnno, I had to drive myself about 70 miles over corrugated roads in the Kimberlies with an abcessed tooth in an old Landy so I have some idea of your predicament. But at least I had something to do.
Whisky it is, but though I never smoked much, an old bushie said that cigarette smoke in the mouth would dull the pain, and it did. Poor old dentist got the worst of it though, I stank.

Sorry to hear it John! Try putting a clove or two in your mouth but go for the high end Panadol for something to really knock it out ... so to speak! If watching DVDs, try Castaway!

Cloves do work Johnno but I'd get into some Panodol Forte as well.

it's a sewing day, it's been raining pretty much non stop for 24 hours.

I went out with my brolly and looked at the ballast, it's shrunk a bit which was expected. What's not full of lead is full of water.....mumble mumble mumble.

I'm not keen to lift 800 kgs out of a hole in mud and slush. The rain is not heavy but it hasn't stopped since early yesterday. I have other jobs I can do anyway and the important part is that it's cast.

    Sounds prudent Gary.
We have a few options re our accom. on the tweed, what's the school hols dates up there so we can dodge them, and what's the date that would suit you, Peter, Duncan, Johnno, Greg. etc?
Got a bit stir crazy today and went for a paddle. Got rained on, blown about, tipped over twice but I rolled it. First time I've rolled this one in anger. Turned cold again tonight and raining here as well. Wet suit weather.

I don't know where I'll be Jeff, hopefully working somewhere but I'd like to make sure I'm here when you come up. At the moment I am up for positions in Perth, Mackay, Gladstone, Darwin, Malaysia and off-shore, the Perth one seems the most likely at the moment, and the least desirable unfortunately, but I'm not in any position to be fussy. Either way, when you know your plans let me know and I'll try and be here.

Rains eased off to light drizzle so figured I'd have a go at lifting the ballast with the chainblock suspended between two 44s...not a hope. No harm in being optimistic...of course I am trying to lift all the cement around it as well. 10:1 is actually stronger than I would have thought.

Sorry, wrong terminology? By offshore I mean off any shore, at sea. The other one that I missed is PNG, I did put in for that Phil.

We had 110mm altogether but it's not quite over, it's still heavy overcast and mud.Did I mention mud ! We live on a ridge top and it's muddy .

It might be worth digging down the side to let a bit of air down there... half formed ideas of vacuum bagging and the effective seal of lots of mud ......

Oh, that kind of offshore! Good luck with PNG-and the rest. Something will come up. For what its worth I reckon its worth being a bit picky-life's too short to be stuck in a job you hate. I've seen cases where taking the wrong job has pretty much stalled a guy's career. Nearly happened to me when I took the wrong job with BHP. I should have waited. Luckily this one came up, which I'm loving.

Pretty much what happened with the last job here on the GC Phil, a few benefits but soul destroying on the whole. Although I must admit that I'm getting rather desperate now, everything that I'm up for at the moment would be valuable career wise and worth the effort. Perth would be the hardest to manage because it is full time Perth based, very similar to the Darwin job that I had a couple of years ago, but much harder to get home for the weekend every few weeks. It's only a six to 7 month contract and a door back into that defence contracting work but the way Swanny is decimating budgets at the moment I suspect that it may end up the same as Darwin a few years ago, ie stop all contracting works, let everything go to crap again and have to play catchup a few years down the track.

I've managed to lift it a few inches and break all the cement away from the mold. I'll put up a photo or two. Very muddy and now where near as much fun as pouring it.

Take care Gary, 800K of lead on a muddy slope is a dangerous piece of kit.

SBS, 7.30, Robinson Crusoe. The book had a lot of truth to it. the Juan Fernandez Islands were a place used by pirates and privateers for repair and recovery and one island has been renamed Robinson Crusoe Island.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robinson_Crusoe_Island
Will. Dampier supposedly told a story to Defoe, who lived nearby in London and that's how the story developed. Evidently because ships called all the time it was not uncommon for a man or men to stay o the island if they wanted to change employment, or had become unwelcome on the ship they were on. Pirating was not at all as hollywood portrays of course, but it was democratic. a company of 'pirates' elected their own captain, and could expel a person by the same method. Somewhere I have an autobiography of Dampier and it is clearly explained in the book.

Hi Mike, thanks for asking about the story. I've been meaning to write it down for years but I never got around to it. You've prompted me to make a start and I'm going to write it up as book chapters, and if I ever finish it will become an e-book. If you want to you can read draft versions of the chapters as I write them. They will be subject to revision so feel free to comment, maybe as private nnessages as this isn't really woodenboat content as it was a plastic boat.
Thank you for giving me the nudge to make a start on it.

Bruce mate, when is Chapter 3 out? Your story reminds me of me. Twice now I've bought a boat a long way from where I was at the time, sailed it home with no preparation, and told the wife of the acquisition somewhere along the journey. That's the most dangerous part.

There may be a lot of pieces to pick up after this schemozzle is over, but I'm not at all sure the alternatives are up to the job either

On another note, our dates up north are 13th to the 20th July at Kingscliff and a few days either side p[robably. An EBS would be good and I want to look at Looe and Redwing and any available others of course.

Had a beautiful afternoon on the bay today. Out on the last of a big falling tide, traced the course of the river in it's channel, the bars and banks are thick with sea grass an looking very healthy, The whole trip, 3.5 hours, was in about 30-75 cms of water till the tide turned and then we basically drifted letting it bring us back. Hundreds of birds feeding on the submerging banks, whiting jumping everywhere in about 30cms water. Flotillas of Swans and Pelicans overherad. Water like a millpond, fantastic.

Great stuff Bruce I can smell the salt and reminds me of my time tackling the Coffs bar even though the seas were slight in the dark with trawlers coming and going it was a nervous skipper as you say we southerners are not accustomed to crossing bars. Looking forward to the next episode.

An EBS sounds like a great idea Jeff. Redwing should have spouted a keel by then. I'm now thinking August as a launch month.

Another thing you don't see at high tide, the whole bank on both sides from where we put in to the mouth of the river channel was a thick, wide shell midden. Species that are no longer found in the bay, even a variety of mud crab, a veritable seafood supermarket. I have an acquaintance who was always very dismissive of Aboriginal claims regarding their past treatment and present rights. Old grazier stock. On a recent visit to Sydney he was taken to what he called an 'Aboriginal Museum' and it shocked him, he said he felt sick and had to leave. Now he's reading madly and telling everyone what many have known and he's just discovered. 'We' stole the place.

We did Jeff, bit by bit and there's still a few claiming we didn't. it's a common story in most countries...guns and steel against spears and arrows.

Many have that "Saul on the road to Damascus" moment. Makes for some interesting dinner parties.
