Default Duck Punt - free plans for the boat with no rudder, plate or leeboards

The duck punt plans are now available on the web

the wonderful blokes from West Mersea - Tags and the amazing boatbuilder John Milgate have given permission for them to be turned loose on the world

    this bloke

    http://flo-mo.weebly.com/boat-design-studies.html

is going to recreate the punt as a lightweight stitch and glue design

it will have to be light as I intend to car top it on a Nissan Micra and also tow it behind my bike as I use the boat to to explore the sand estuaries of North Norfolk. I am a wildlife cameraman and hope to use it to sneak up on a few birds

it is a wonderfully simple and practical boat that can be built in a week - apparently.

The plans are on this page as pdfs

    http://www.keepturningleft.co.uk/blogs/duck-punt/

there are also some films of blokes sailng them

For those who cannot cope with pdfs then the plans are here as jpegs

    http://www.keepturningleft.co.uk/gal...-punt-gallery/

    each image is 2mb

so if you have a lousy connection you will have to be patient

Finally, I am planning to build the duck punt over the christmas period

so there is also a short tour of the area where I am going to build it and also some shots of my 400 micra that has only 12,000 miles on the clock and is set to become the new KTL car.

If anyone strays across to some of the other pages on my website then try this page first

    http://www.keepturningleft.co.uk/cat...along-the-way/

where there are films of loads of wooden boats - includuing the amazing oyster brig and a bolger micro being sailed

I should warn you though that the website is a video site - so if you have terrible bandwidth problems then it will go very slowly

I also suggest you close a few windows if your computer is strapped for Ram resources otherwise it will crash your flash player

but this will not harm your computer in any way

but even with a crashed flash player you can still click on the film titles to make them play

Good luck and I will be posting regular updates on the duck punt build between now and the hoped for launch in the new year

any feedback or images I should see

feel free to PM mne or email me on

first question is.... can nI go thinner than 6mm ply

I intend to use a lot of cheap self driving stainless screws to assembling the boat and am also considering using polyester

this is going to be a quick and dirty build

    Hi Dylan,
Cant find the pdf on there, and the links aren't working for me.
Have a look at this, there are old decked punts racing. I'd be happier with a deck myself.

It really is quite difficult to build an ugly wooden boat.

Those are neat boats. Seem to sail quite well for not having a board in the water.

one of my neighburs suggested that put a small glass panel in the bottom of the boat

that way I can film the fish as I am sneaking up on the birds

    any thoughts on this idea

    I really, really like it

I think that sounds like a great idea as long as you can seal it so it doesn't leak. It would take all the fun out of the fish watching to end up eyeball to eyeball with them.

Simplest and least expensive boat I have every seen!
    This is great!

I and a friend up in Kitery Maine tried to track down these plans for months and ended up designing our own 14 ft punt based on the West Mersa type, the boat sails amazingly well with no rudder or center/dagger/lee board of any kind, the steering oar and the hard chine are very efficient in preventing side slip.

We built our punt of pine planks with oak framing and it is set up to row paddle or sail and we are putting together a set of ice runners to sail it as an iceboat!
