Re: Remote oil filters
The remote kit is not what is critical. There are many sources for nice billet aluminum remote kits. The key is finding the right filters. Canoeyawl hit it right on the head in #4, follow his advice. I put a nice double remote filter kit on my westerbeke 40 and had a good 10 degree drop in operating temp (which was good) due to the much larger filters I was able to use (went from 1/2 pint to one quart per filter!) and the better air cooling around the filters. Being bulkhead mounted the filters are much easier to change, and I was able to find MUCH cheaper filters that still had the specs I wanted. The savings in filter costs offsets the cost of the remote kit. Consider using a double filter set, one with a very fine filter and the other with a coarse filter. The pair make a bypass unit that REALLY cleans up the oil nicely. To make a bypass unit they have to be run in "parallel". The downside of this type of setup is that you end up replacing the fine filter twice as often as the coarse, but filters are cheap in comparison to engines.
