    Default Morbic 12 Sailing Dinghy, New Kit Build by Students in Portland

    A group of Falmouth H.S. students have just started building the Morbic 12 designed by Francois Vivier. Students are building the boat at The Compass Project boatshop in Portland. We are building the boat from pilot kit supplied by our friend and neighbor, Clint Chase.

    The design employs a very user friendly method of notching the molds and bulkhead supports over the building girder. Compass Project volunteer, Allen Armstrong works with a student to measure and mark the station locations

    Clint visited the class the other day to talk about the CNC routing process:

    And yes, for not-quite-Halloween Clint actually went as a HUMAN CNC ROUTER--spooky!

    MANY MORE PICTURES AND POSTS TO COME;

    PLEASE ALSO CHECK OUT:

    Laminating the transom:

    Here is the plywood stem that is laminated from pieces; all parts to be laminated include alignment holes that can be bolted together to ensure proper alignment:

    The way that the laminates align for the stem, bulkheads and transom, the layers are offset and bevels are planed connecting the high and low spots on the part.

    Good to see students doing something with their hands and minds. Way to much addiction to little electronic devices.

    School holidays aside; progress has resumed on the Morbic 12 construction. This afternoon, we glued on the bottom plank (or "sole" as our French naval architect friends might say).

    We glued on the garboard today. The plank fit like a glove. One down 11 planks to go! The class meets once a week for an hour and a half. Any bets on when we'll turn the hull?

    Looks good Shane. You've got the jump on us but we'll try to catch up. When your guys are on vacation is when we have lots of time to build.

    We just glued on the 2nd strake on the starboard side with simultaneous beveling and gain cutting on the port side. Just nine more planks to go! The holidays are coming, with a distinct advantage to the Bauer family boatyard...the race is on! Hull turning early February for the Morbic, hopefully, stay tuned!

    3 strakes glued on starboard side, 2 glued port side. We're aiming to get it all planked up by February Vacation.

    Each class our trusty retired-engineer volunteer Allen has been working with groups of students doing various physics related labs and experiments. Today's group of students presented about simple machines and demonstrated the use of levers and pulleys.

    Wow. Lovely. Great work. Kids building boats, in boats, rowing boats- very nice.
