Default New engine for Olinka , larger engine made to fit

When we re-engine Olinka from a 4108 to a Perkins M65 , the new engine did not fit . First I had to make a new bell housing , with the starter raised 20 degrees ( old bell housing had starter at 3 o'clock ) , and 2 inches shorter , to fit between the ribs . Oh and this engine switch was done in the water .

These first 2 pictures are hanging the bell housing to find where the rear mounts go .

We made wood patterns before making bronze mounts . We made sure to use old mount holes and tide to the steel floors .

Here you can see the new bronze mounts , and also how close the starter is to the ribs .

Next we made patterns for front mounts .

Again using the old mount holes , and tying into the steel floors .

Here you can see the new bell housing , also had to run the trans upside down

Lucky they had 2 places so we moved the oil filter forward . The front mounts had to be raised 2 inches ( because I screwed up measuring the boat ) , but worked out OK

Close up on the new front mount .

To make installing the eng. easier we belt an A frame just for is boat . Lifting was all done with halyards .

    And it fit .

    Tight fit

We did not have to shim anything , everything ran dead true

And a digital camera is a must

was it made from a weldiment or machined from a solid billet?

Someone has to comment on how clean your bilges are. Spotless.

Good luck with your new engine and I did not know you could run transmissions upside down. I had a Hurth fall apart literally on me once, although it was probably the fault of a not properly opening folding prop, I still don't trust them.

wardd I fabricated the bronze mounts , and machined the bell-housing and front engine brackets (billet) . On the bell-housing , I had the out side and center hole ruft out with a water bast , and the rest was done on a big rotary table and a mill . It started out about a hundred pounds , finish weight 28 pounds It took about a week machine , but it was a fun project . A lot of turns without power feed , it was a little too big for our CNC

I love them , 28 years never had a problem , I've blown up my share of drive plates , but never a Hurth

My old engine was custom in a funny way . 4108 engine , with 4105 bell-housing and oil pan , leaked like a civ .

Very nicely done.It has to be a great contribution to your peace of mind to know the installation so well.

I replaced a 4108 also. Gotta give 'em credit for being a workhorse, but noisy & messy for sure.

    Lucky Olinka !
very impressive job ! including varnished bilges ! but just wondering about the upside down hurth gearbox..already so fragile on the "normal " position...!? (where they can overheat due to little exces of oil .!?! )

The dip-stick and the drain plug are interchangeable , and most inside parts are under oil . Hurth says it's OK in the manual . The old engine had and even smaller Hurth transmission , and it was up-side-down too .

Very pretty. I was surprised to see the engine mounts just bolted to a couple of ribs, and presumably the planks. I'm used to seeing longer bearers, spreading the weight, torque, vibration a bit further. And you obviously don't like turbo's-I reckon they are a great way of getting more HP per pound. But to be honest, I reckon you and your helpers might know a lot more than I do.

The work is impeccable, but how are you handling the radiant heat from the engine block? I don't have the handbook here, but in an IC engine about 80 to 85% of the combustion heat is carried off with the exhaust and cooling water, the balance is radiant heat into the 'space' around it. Is the heat radiated from the diesel a lot less or do you have a good ventilation system? It all looks very tight.

Phil We tried to use the same holes that the last engine was using , If you look at some of the pictures at the beginning of this thread , you well see that we bolted to the oak ribs , and the steel floors (4 in the back and two in the front) , witch are copper riveted through the planks . We also have an aqua-drive unit that came with really soft mounts , so right now the main vibration problem has been the exhaust system . I'm pretty happy with my 8.3 knots with my little 65 hp engine . When we bought the boat 7.2 knots was max . If I had the chance to do a do-over , The turbo would win . Bob

Paul We have not had any heat issues yet , at cruise you can put your hand anywhere in the box without being burned , even the exhaust manifold and heads . Bob

    Hi Bob,
WOW! Fantastic. Did you design the new bell housing or did Perkins provide specs for that? Either way, not something I could even conceive of doing. Beautiful job.

Chris We took the measurements from the old bell housing . The project was scary at the beginning , but once we saw how the numbers went together , it was fun going . Bob

Is that a Halon extinguisher in there? I thought they were taboo on boats.

BTW, don't hide the engine room, it's too pretty to cover up!

    Hope not!

AFAIK, new installations are not OK, but existing are. Of course an inspected vessel is a whole other kettle o' fish.....

I am now officially embarrassed by Neoga's engine compartment. Up to this point I thought it was pretty nice too....

Nah, I just thought when production of halon systems stopped it was due to health and safety reasons. My ignorance was showing. A quick google just now set me straight. It's a CFC, that's why they're out of production.

Wow, I just have to say -- that is some beautiful fabrication and fitting.

And from the faint praise department -- your engine room is cleaner and better organized than my galley!

I have been thinking that a Yanmar 14 or 20 hp would fit nicely in place of the old Universal that went belly up with a hole in the water jacket.
The guys at Boatswain's Locker have worked with me on other projects for many years. I have checked out the engines, with a critical eye, and found that they are quieter, lighter and smoother than the old 1960 Universal that was in her.
Your own engine instalation has set a new bench mark for pristine craftsmanship. I am very envious!

Peter sorry but that was one picture I wish I had . I didn't get my little Digital camera until after the engine project started . The rear mount was a big ugly welded thing that went over the engine , and was in the way of everything , and if a screw fill out the engine would fall in the bilge . Bob

Lew I think your right I have been a mold maker most of my life , so things in my life have had to be made with no tolerance or mistakes , tolerances are for the people who use my tools , so they can screw up and still have a usable product . My wife has me pegged , she says I spend too much time on details , as soon as we get close to being able to use it , I find something that needs fixing .
