Default What do people know about Daniel Boone?

I don't know much. I read a few books as a kid. Mostly latter day hagiographies.

I know he was a very good shot. I know he was a very good leader of the European pioneers moving over the Eastern Mountains into Ohio and Kaintuck. I know he cut a road through the woods, so a wagon could move over it. I know he was adopted into the Shawnee nation because of his bravery, after he ran the gaunlet. A line of warriors, armed with clubs, and women taunting you, if you made it through you were considered worthwhile. Maybe if you just faced it and didn't make it through.

I know I've mentioned him before, but an interesting character.

    Women Taunting you!!! good grief.

    We used to sing

    Daniel Boon was a man
    He was a big Man
    But the bear was bigger
So he ran like Tigger up a tree.

What's wrong with women showing off and taunting, Meli? From what I've read, they'd raise their skirts and show their privates, as a sign of disrepect when a captive ran the gaunlet.

Boone ran it, the whole way, and that's part of the reason the Shawnee adopted him. Here is a special man to make it through that!

A sign of disrespect you say?
I must pass this gem of information on to my wife.
"I'm not gonna spend any time looking up stuff."

Traditional insult in other older cultures too, rather like mooning actually. Turning your back on someone is a serious insult in some Aus. Aboriginal cultures, (there are more than one).

As regards Mr. Boone, not much. I've read Lewis and Clark's journal a few times and about the Hudsons Bay company. Even about Crockett but Boone seems to have slipped by me. Wasn't there a dreadful TV show half a century or so ago?

well, the anniversary of his death was last month. 1844, or so. And a bar stool is something that he stepped in.

His house is only a few miles from where I live ... drove by it the other day with the kids!

A few miles East is the starting point for Lewis and Clark. Pretty cool US history right around here ...
Nothing else matters but how I raise my children ... and their opinion of me, as a father.

Does anyone remember those little orange books in the fifties that were biographical? Daniel Boone was one.But there must have been fifty of notable characters.. Can't remember who wrote them. *I really know very little about him except for the obvious information we get out of basic history books..

My son has a friend named Boone, They say they are descended from him, Made me think, My great grandma was from Holland and her maiden name was Boonstra, could be like Smith though over there.

Ish,, truth, myths and legends..Hard to tell them apart at times. As some legends were created in his lifetime and he did not deny them, do the legends become fact?

Daniel Boone was a closet homosexual and a strong proponent of gay marriage. Sorry Jack, but the truth must be told.

He was big and tall with very good eyesight. Unafraid and courageous, he was tough like an oak tree and fought a lot, especially for American freedom. He was a boon and wonder to all who knew him. He was a dream comer truer.

If you want to read something good with D Boone as a sidescript, try The Frontiersmen.

There was an inscription in a tree, good provenance because Boone had spoken of the incident, that was still visible in the mid-nineteenth century.

"D. Boone killed a bar on this tree."

There's a lot to say, good and bad, about those men who forged West: Boone, Kenton, Crocket.

If you are interested in the era a great historical novel that centers on Simon Kenton is "The Frontiersman." Alan Eckert.

Daniel Boone VII and his son Tom came to my barn-raising 'bout 8 yrs ago. They make their living as blacksmiths here in Va. Why don't you ask them about their ancestor?
    Also check out John Colter.

    Folk lore.
I can show you a Beech tree here in Guilford that says the same thing. I know exactly what it says, because I carved it when I was about11.

No Jaime. I spelled it "D. Boone" If I'd spelled it as you did, people like Jack wouldn't be fooled by it.

Brad it is not a lack of interest but making an attempt to separate fact and fiction. I think that his background coming from a Quaker background himself ( fact ) is interesting.

I know my dad's ancestors went west with him and settled around what is now Boone Co. KY. Some of them are buried in the cemetary in Beaver Lick KY. Anybody that'd name their town that can't be all bad.

I used to live in Penfield,PA. It's northnern end borders on Boone Mountain. Can be read about very briefly here....http:// duboishs.com/index.php/penfield/

"In 1820,...These men found a hunterís booth, possibly built by Daniel Boone, who once visited this region, it is said, and whose name is preserved in that of the mountain range north of town. "

    That's a funny one, Bob.

I hadn't thought about it in years, but used to do some reading about the European expansion Westward.

The Amer-Indian often accepted the frontiersmen, because they were as good in the woods as any Indian. Some of the them also saw the rising tide, and what these men meant for a way of life that was centuries old. It meant the death of it, and they knew it.

Growing up in Ohio, which used to be Shawnee country, I never met a person of Amer-Indian extraction. They were simply wiped out, or fled when it became obvious what was happening.

I don't like romanticizing it, but I do like remembering.
