    Default Sails for Gaff Sloop

4 years ago I resurrected a 23' boat and while at it, changed the rig from fractional macaroni to gaff for simplification and cruising.
New mast, boom, gaff ,blocks, rigging AND a quickie set of sails to test it all out. Re cut/cut up from old clapped out sails laying around, and to finish them off, a coat of red benjamin moore. This set would let me check on rig balance and what not. Would I want a sportier rig? Longer boom?
I took the sails home for safe storage the first winter but a mouse ate a hole in the main, so I left' em on the next 3 years. Never covered them. Sewed them together with one row of stitching.
At last years swap meet, a genoa from a 34'er was obtained for $50. Cloth was still decent, about 4 oz, so, Filet of Sail!

A very simple floor,( ply on dirt), broad seams by eye/feel/done it before, taped together.
I made only a few small changes. The boom length was short for sportiness, but good for sculling.pfaff rides againHandwork? We don't need no stinking handwork!

A day sewing, cornering, taping,a quick re cut of a jib from a buchaneer 210, Bob
    s yer Uncle.
This set will not be getting painted, the pretty white jib will live in a bag, and the boom tent has a little extension to keep the clew in the shade.

Nice job with the sails. I think you actually improved the looks of an already lovely boat. What kind of boat is that? Is there a design we can examine?

This is inspirational, since I have been reading books on sailmaking and shopping for a heavy duty sewing machine. Everytime I find a good one, zigzag for $20, etc., I get tangled up on something related to "career", or, the seller doesn't know how to use it and the risk is all mine. I would like to hear what Bradshaw would say!

Well, I would have thought going from a maccaroni rig to gaff is just plain backwards, but dang, Im impressed with your style.........really cool.

Thanks, I raced my "sistership" (N 64) at Port Townsend last year and cleaned his clock, (light air), talk about getting beat by a pair of 2s!
( and later towed him 10 miles)

I'm with Tall Boy: not sure that going from 2 halyards/2 sheets, a vang and a fixed backstay to 4 halyards (looks like you've got a staysail or flying jib setup -- and 1 or more of topping lift/running backstays/lazyjacks really consitutes "simplification", but the results do look nice.

Off the wind, too, I'm sure she leaves most other Kutters in the dust.

Looks excellent! My only gripe would be using radial corner patches on a cross-cut sail. Certain production lofts do it frequently to save time/money, but you're generally much better off matching the weave orientation between your panel fabric and that of the patches for best strength and smoothness. Radial sail=radial patches, cross-cut or vertically-cut sails, traditional matching patches.
