Thread: Neotraditional fast design

    Default Neotraditional fast design

Hi, new member here, interested in building a Tornado to be used mostly for fun and occasionally for very minimalist camp cruising for two.

Here's the problem. I have no interest in aluminum beams/mast/etc...

If you were tasked with building a Tornado with no visible carbon or aluminum, how would you accomplish this without sacrificing a lot of performance?

I've had thoughts of a veneered carbon mast... wood-masted biplane rig... etc...

In the past my boats have been dories and wherries. I have no experience with large, powerful stayed rigs.

    Advice, please?

Nigel Irens' luggers Roxanne and Romilly have carbon spars, painted spar buff and white. Very trad looking (once you get past the lack of stays and the fully battened sails):

    Hi Jim
I like how your thinking, sounds like fun!

Clarification, are you interested in building a "Tornado" one design catamaran or are you looking for a fast day sailing/racing type catamaran with performance and size similar to a tornado?

Are you familiar with Nat Herreshoffs design "Amarillis" of 1876? This cat is a real stunner and capable of speeds in excess of 20 mph?

The Amarillis design could be a great design to take as inspiration for a 20-25 ft. beach cat with speed and very traditional styling.

What a great idea - build a reproduction of Amaryllis.

It really is stunning how similar in design Amarillis is to the Extreme 40's i saw racing on Boaston Harbour last weekend! they even have the stayed bowsprit with giant "baloon jib"/Asym spinaker!

Until you consider the materials, the weight and the performance.

The use of epoxy alone would halve Amaryllis' weight and double the performance. Other materials offer more in performance, simplicity and longevity.

    Damfino might offer an idea.

Structural materials are wood, foam, glass, carbon and epoxy. What's visible is white paint, varnished mahogany and scrubbed teak.

    Sweet Jesus!

What's the saying... "Be careful what you wish for"?

A few hours ago I was considering an extremely simple, fast build. Now I'm considering Amaryillis.

I can build narrow 20' hulls on the diagonal in my garage. Longer = Bow Shed.
I know that he designed at least a handful of cats. Were any of them less than 20'? A bow shed is doable... just not preferable.
Do I hear the wonderful sound of a pencil sketching some perverted, heretical, dark and dangerous incarnation of one of Nat's cats? I won't even mention his alleged (model) proa (can I say that here?)

P.S. My wife asked me to extend to you her full hatred.

Yes, that looks great, as does everything that comes off Michael Schact's board. With 'Evergreen', the CLC proa 'Madness' and Gary Dierking ramping up his style mojo on the Va'a Motu it looks like we are getting in to a good patch for multihull aesthetics after some wilderness years.
