Default Search and rescue off Newfoundland

For what it is worth, Harper has decided to close the marine emergencies sub station in St. John's. If you get in trouble off the coast of Newfoundland and Labrador, in the future, you will be calling Halifax. I don't know if they will need Google Earth to find you, but the local knowledge base will be gone. Stay out of trouble.

Wow. Hell of a long ways from Halifax to anywhere on the Labrador coast.

The centre in Halifax is a JRCC, a Joint Rescue Co-odination Centre. It's staffed by airforce and coast guard personnel and co-ordinates all air and sea SAR activity in it's region. The centre being shut down is a MRSC, a Marine Rescue Sub Centre that co-ordinates Marine SAR in their areas and assists the JRCC in co-ordinating with the air part of any searches. The actual assets involved in SAR aren't located at these centres. This'll probably be great for saving money until a large SAR operation somewhere remote, or a few SAR operations happen at the same time. Then I doubt it'll sit so pretty.
I'll just take my chances with those salt water joys.

I never thought that help was close out there anyway.
