Re: Search and rescue off Newfoundland
The centre in Halifax is a JRCC, a Joint Rescue Co-odination Centre. It's staffed by airforce and coast guard personnel and co-ordinates all air and sea SAR activity in it's region. The centre being shut down is a MRSC, a Marine Rescue Sub Centre that co-ordinates Marine SAR in their areas and assists the JRCC in co-ordinating with the air part of any searches. The actual assets involved in SAR aren't located at these centres. This'll probably be great for saving money until a large SAR operation somewhere remote, or a few SAR operations happen at the same time. Then I doubt it'll sit so pretty.
I'll just take my chances with those salt water joys.
