Sounds like an interesting approach. How are you planning to cut out the sheet?

i'm hoping my scroll saw is up to it, but haven't had it long and not sure if it's capable of that. i may try a dremel if that fails.
first attempt at an oarlock:
i was going to open up the center more, but decided i need some thicker sheet. i'll just call this a prototype.
Your model has huge charm .What scale are you working to ? I'm looking at your tool setup .I don't have a dremel or the tiny clamps .Any other key tools one would want ?

thanks. i'm working at 1 1/2 inch equals 1 foot (1/8th). one tool that i used on just about every piece of wood in the boat is a small plane. i mostly used a little Stanley trim plane. i didn't really use the dremel all that often. i got a little mini table saw that was also helpful. it doesn't have blade depth or tilt adjustment but the fence and miter guide are very useful.
a scroll saw was very handy too.
spars and oarlocks still to do.
a friend on fb mentioned that i need a little bailing bucket so ...

Gaw-jess!
This new ship here is fitted according to the reported increase of knowledge among mankind. Namely, she is cumbered end to end with bells and trumpets and clocks and wires. It has been told to me she can call voices out of the air or the waters to con the ship while her crew sleep. But sleep though lightly. It has not yet been told to me that the sea has ceased to be the sea.--Rudyard Kipling
This thread is starting to get surreal! Nice job.

Very nicely done P-man! It's going to look great with a sail on it too. Are you going to build a display case for it?

thanks, Jim. yes, i suppose i'll have to make some kind of case. i just looked at some online and the smallest was $150, without glass, so i guess i'll be building something.
i wasn't even going to try to make a sail out of cloth, so i took a tip from Dynamite Payson and made it out of 1/64th birch plywood. i didn't know they could make plywood that thin. i cut it with scissors.

Plywood for sails, who knew? The model turned out fantastic! When are you going to get started on the full sized version?

thanks, Jim. i need to try and redo some of the lines properly (my lame little cleats are difficult to tie off to) and it still doesn't have a main sheet. yeah, i liked the idea of the plywood. sails seem like one of the hardest aspects of a model to get the right look and i decided not to even try. as far as the full size version, the more i think about it, trying to learn to sail a small boat at my age and level of decrepitude is probably not a good idea, so i think i may build something more power oriented. currently i'm evaluating several candidates for my next model, probably something at 1/4 scale.
