    Request:

Please submit photos or plans of pretty plywood boats. Any type of construction, batten, sheet, lap-ply, stitch and glue. Any size. Any type. The only restriction is that it be pretty, and plywood of course.

    Show me what you got,

I think this one is pretty. I built her so I am just slightly prejudiced about it. Fred Shell designed Swifty 12 with a few custom touches. Everybody loves their first boat.

Paul, you opened up a Pandora's box. It would be easier to go to WB home page and click on to "My Wooden Boat".

Well, ply lapstrake boats are almost cheating. It's WAY too easy to find pretty ones. Anything by Iain Oughtred qualifies, certainly.

Here are a couple of sheet plywood boats. The links are to the web pages of the folks selling the plans.

First, Phil Bolger's Gypsy : Taped-seam "instant boat" construction. I built one of these years ago (the picture's not of mine - I don't like the color, but it was the best I could find) and she's even more graceful on the water than the pictures show.

Another Phil Bolger design, the Gloucester Light Dory, AKA Gloucester Gull

Yet another thing of beauty by M. Bolger (he definitely doesn't design only square boats), the Chebacco. There are several versions, sheet ply and lapstrake ply,(also one with a hideous raised cabin).

And no list of lovely plywood boats would be complete without Steve Redmond's Whisp :

And lastly, the Duck Trap Wherries - They're built in both glued ply and traditional lapstrake:

Joel White's pooduck skiff. A complete log of her construction can be found in Building/Repair. Elsewhere under my name you will find an explanation of why the rudder is up in this otherwise pretty good picture.

So far, if we're talking pretty. J.Dillon wins, no contest. Although I really do like that Duck Trap Wherry and Eun Na Mara, and the Chebaca, and, and, and. Tough call! They're all pretty!

They are indeed outstanding examples of plywood boats. No examples of too much varnish (especially Donn's post). They are all very well finished boats showing very good tastes. I would not even attempt to pick a winner.

Thanks again guys, one can never have to much porn to look at.

    Venchka,

I'm not sure that's in the unwritten rules to edit a post to change the photo. As a matter a fact I'm quite sure you should've somply added an additional post.

Man the details of that boat are fantastic. Is it yours?

Great shot of the Eun Na Mara except for the bridge.

I'd like to try to clone out the bridge in the Image by putting it into Adobe Photo work shop.

Any body know how to make the transfer ?

Go to www.duckflatwoodenboats.com for the original. My boat is still a stack of plywood that I need to move tonight so I can insulate the wall it's leaning on, and a pile of molds that I need to move so I can insulate there, too. As you can tell I'm insulating the boatshop/garage.
Crappy job, especially with Gavin's Elf project in the way and all my tools and everything spread out all over the place, but once it's done that Jotul Model Three will keep it nice and toasty in there.

I have cut back the leading edge and reduced the depth of the daggerboard since this shot but have not yet sailed with the new smaller board.

Mark's too modest. Ain't it lovely? He designed it, built it, lives on it and sells plans for it. (If I say this it's not self-promotion.) Here's his web site. I really want to build one of those and head down the river - but not this year, alas.

Ok, you caught me. Guilty as charged! I didn't want to hog the space here so I thought it might be fun to change the picture from time to time.

Yes, Elisabeth Grace is mine. I am indeed fortunate to own her. No, thank goodness I didn't build her. Building honors go to John Anderson of St. Andrews, New Brunswick. John deserves all the credit for reading my mind and devising changes for the interior and an overall excellent job of building a fabulous boat. He exceeded my wildest expectations.

The bad news is that I don't have any pictures yet of Elisabeth Grace on the water under sail. When I do I will share them. In the meantime, here is proof that she floats!

    Brian,

I knew you would showup eventually in this thread. That was a great post, shows us a little variety from the many beautiful lap/ply boats. I have always admired the lines of traditional and near traditional sharpies. The kayaks are nice too. How far is you tri from being launched and sailed? It looks wicked fast and wicked wet.

p.s. I am relieved you did not try to sneak a Bolger Micro in on us.

After looking over the Chebacco site, I'm quite sure it's Jamie and his "Waward Lass". I was introduced to him and his father by our mutual friend John Welsford at the Pt. Townsend Wodden Boat Festival year before last. We shared a nice mexican dinner at a local eattery. He and his dad (a pair of Orrs), are quite nice folks. They had sailed "Wayward Lass" over from Victoria for the festival.

Oughtred's boats are beautiful. Other than his design catalog and his manual on clinker ply construction, I have seen very little written by him.

I wish he wrote more, he is truly gifted small boat designer. His boats are inspirational.

Write to him and pick his brain on any aspect of any of his boats. He answers promptly and in great detail.
