Works? Seriously? 1999 called, they want you to give back their software. Please warn them about 9-11 and the earthquakes and tsunamis while they're on the line. KTHXBYE.

What are you doing about it?

    Have you tried Open Office?

Why on earth would anyone want to use Microsoft Works?

    ok here is the problem

I already have open office on my computer.

someone sent me a spread sheet in microsoft excel format ( is that the same as works?) and I can not open it - I keep getting a little pop up box asking me " what worksheet do you want to import" ( with 4 choices) and when I click on any of them, I get another little box that says at the top

"microsoft works" , then "this document is password proteted or encrypted, open it in the application that saved it, remove the password or encryption, then save it again. then try to open it again in works"

Im not very computer literate - and have had this same trouble with unencryted spreadsheets sent to me via e mail. any help on how to open this thing is appreciated.

    OK. Couple of things:

Excel is not Works - it's part of MS Office.

Look at the file name. Does it end (the part after the period) in "XLS"? If so, it is an Excel file & Open Office will open it. However - I think you are getting the answer - it's password protected. You will need to have them send you the file without password protection.

Sometimes a file will get corrupted in the sending through various email servers. About all you can do is have them re-send it.

Since you have Open Office, it might be that another default program is trying (but failing) to start your spreadsheet.

Right click on the file, select "Open With" from the popup menu, and then select Open Office Calc from the list of programs shown.

If you like, email it to me and I'll try to run it/convert it (unless it's password protected or corrupted, as Garret suggests).

thanks to all for the help and advice - after much experimenting I figured out how to do it

if anyone else has the problem here is what I did

open the mail and right click on the attachment

click on save as and save as a document

open your documents and single left click on the document to highlight it

now right click the document and click on the open with button

theres an open office icon there titled scalc.ex - left click that one and it opens up as the original spreadsheet via open office

I forgot to add that if you have to e mail the spreadsheet, you can do it as either open office or microsoft or another couple of choices by

left clicking on "file " all the way at the top of the spreadsheet, left clicking on send, and left clicking on the format you want it sent in
