    My father-in-law was an electrical engineer for the Portland Traction Company running streetcars in town. The city was experiencing a rash of manhole cover thefts and suspected kids of stealing and leaving manhole covers in various places around town. Don looked at the pattern of "thefts" and "deposits" and realized that the streetcars when running in "compression" downhill were becoming powerful electromagnets which sometimes picked up covers if they were right under the car, only to drop them when polarity was switched for going up grades.
